UCLA Pulls Away From Rutgers in Big Ten Tournament Second Half

CHICAGO (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive second-half surge, the UCLA Bruins pulled away from the Rutgers Scarlet Knights for a 72-59 victory in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at the United Center.

A crowd of 16,861 saw the Bruins improve to 22-10 overall, while Rutgers concluded its season at 14-19.

The contest was a defensive struggle for much of the first half, with both teams trading missed shots and turnovers. Rutgers established an early edge, leading 11-8 after a three-pointer from Harun Zrno of Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, with 14:32 remaining. The Scarlet Knights maintained a narrow advantage for the next several minutes, but UCLA closed the half on a critical 9-2 run. A three-pointer from Trent Perry of West Covina, California, at the 8-minute mark gave UCLA its first lead since the opening basket, and a late triple from Tyler Bilodeau of Kennewick, Washington, with 2:47 left sent the Bruins into halftime with a 30-24 lead.

The second half began with a brief flicker of hope for Rutgers as Angelino Mark of Chatsworth, California, opened the scoring with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three. That hope was quickly extinguished by a relentless UCLA offensive onslaught. The Bruins erupted with a 14-4 run over a four-minute span, transforming a close game into a commanding double-digit lead. The sequence was a showcase of UCLA’s superior ball movement and shot creation, fueled by the backcourt duo of Donovan Dent of Riverside, California, and Perry.

Dent, who orchestrated the offense with precision, found Eric Dailey of Palmetto, Florida, for an alley-oop dunk. On the next possession, Dent assisted on a Perry three-pointer. After a Rutgers turnover, Dent again set up Perry for another three, pushing the lead to 44-31 with 16:10 to play and forcing a Scarlet Knights timeout. The Bruins’ lead ballooned to as many as 18 points in the half as Rutgers struggled to find consistent offense against UCLA’s tightening defense.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably UCLA’s explosive 14-4 run to start the second half. It shifted the contest from a tense, low-scoring affair into a comfortable Bruin advantage from which Rutgers never recovered. The run was a direct result of heightened defensive pressure leading to transition opportunities and flawless execution in the half-court, effectively deciding the outcome long before the final buzzer.

Bilodeau led all scorers with 21 points, capitalizing on his opportunities inside and at the free-throw line. Dent controlled the game’s tempo and finished with a double-double of 12 points and 12 assists. Perry added 12 points, including two crucial three-pointers during the decisive run, and contributed four assists and a block.

Rutgers was led by Mark’s 17 points and five assists. Darren Buchanan of Washington, D.C., and Zrno each added nine points. The Scarlet Knights were hampered by 15 turnovers, which UCLA converted into 19 points, and were outscored 42-35 in the second half.

UCLA shot efficiently from the field, while Rutgers struggled with its shooting percentage. The Bruins also held a significant advantage from the three-point line and the free-throw line.

The game was part of the Big Ten Conference schedule. UCLA entered as a pregame favorite and its victory confirmed the statistical projections, which heavily favored the Bruins. The total score fell under the projected over/under line.

This matchup was a rematch of a Feb. 3 game in Los Angeles, which UCLA won 98-66. The Bruins have now won five of their last six games heading into postseason play, while Rutgers ends its season having lost two of its final three.
