Xavier vs. Marquette

Preview: Xavier, Marquette Meet in Big East Tournament

NEW YORK (Interstat) — The opening round of the 2026 Big East Men’s Basketball Championship at Madison Square Garden features a rubber match between two teams looking to salvage difficult seasons when seed Xavier faces seed Marquette on Wednesday.

The Musketeers (14-17) and Golden Eagles (12-19) split their regular-season series, each winning on their home floor. Xavier won the most recent meeting, 96-88, on Feb. 14 behind 23 points from forward Jovan Milicevic. Marquette guard Nigel James was spectacular in defeat, posting 30 points and 12 assists.

Both teams enter the postseason on divergent trajectories. Marquette has won two straight, including a 68-62 upset of Connecticut on March 7. James averaged 19.5 points and 4.5 assists in those victories.

Xavier has lost five of its last six games, though Milicevic has been a consistent bright spot. He is averaging 17.1 points over his last seven contests, including a 21-point, 6-rebound effort in a loss at Villanova on Saturday.

The winner advances to face top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Villanova in Thursday’s quarterfinals. The loser’s season is over.

For Xavier, stopping James is the primary defensive focus. He torched them for 30 points last month and is the engine for Marquette’s offense. The Musketeers will counter with their own high-scoring forward in Milicevic, who has scored 20 or more points in three of his last seven outings.

While both teams are well below .500, the conference tournament offers a reset. History in this series suggests a close game; the last two meetings were decided by a total of three points, with the road team losing each time. Now on a neutral court, execution in the final minutes will likely decide which team extends its stay in New York.
