South Florida Dominates Charlotte Behind Pinion’s 22 Points
TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — The South Florida Bulls, riding a potent offensive performance from Joseph Pinion and Wes Enis, secured a decisive 83-60 victory over the Charlotte 49ers in an American Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Sunday at the Sun Dome.
A crowd of 6,710 watched as the Bulls improved to 23-8 overall, while Charlotte fell to 15-16. South Florida entered as a heavy favorite and controlled the contest from the outset, building a commanding 44-29 halftime lead that the 49ers could not overcome.
The most important part of the game was South Florida’s explosive first-half run that effectively decided the outcome early. After a competitive opening few minutes that saw Charlotte take a brief 7-4 lead, the Bulls unleashed a devastating 22-4 surge over a six-minute span to seize complete control. The run showcased South Florida’s balanced attack, with Pinion and Enis scoring from the perimeter and Izaiyah Nelson and Isaiah Jones providing interior finishes. The burst transformed a narrow 9-7 Charlotte edge into a 29-11 Bulls advantage, establishing a margin that proved insurmountable.
Pinion, a 6-foot-5 guard from Morrilton, Arkansas, led all scorers with 22 points, adding four assists in 33 minutes. His backcourt partner, Wes Enis of Conover, Ohio, was equally instrumental, contributing 20 points and a game-high six assists. The duo combined for eight of South Florida’s 11 three-pointers, consistently stifling any attempt by Charlotte to build momentum.
The Bulls’ frontcourt provided ample support. Izaiyah Nelson, a 6-foot-10 forward from Marietta, Georgia, posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Isaiah Jones of Nashville, Tennessee, also scored 10. Daimion Collins added nine points and three blocks off the bench, anchoring a defensive effort that limited Charlotte’s opportunities.
For the 49ers, the size of center Anton Bonke was a rare bright spot. The 7-foot-2 native of Port Vila, Vanuatu, finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and a block. Dezayne Mingo of Hamilton, Canada, and Jarne Elouna Eyenga of Mechelen, Belgium, each added nine points. Charlotte struggled with ball security, committing 18 turnovers that South Florida converted into 23 points, a key disparity in the contest.
South Florida’s offensive execution was sharp throughout, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 42 percent from three-point range. Charlotte, conversely, managed only 38 percent shooting overall and a frigid 24 percent from beyond the arc. The Bulls also dominated in the paint, outscoring the 49ers 42-28.
After their game-breaking first-half run, South Florida never allowed Charlotte within 15 points in the second half. The Bulls steadily expanded their lead, pushing it to as many as 26 points before settling on the 23-point final margin. The victory capped a strong regular-season finish for South Florida, which has won eight of its last nine games. Charlotte concludes its regular season having lost three of its final four contests.
The game’s statistical outcome defied the pregame betting line, as South Florida covered the 16-point spread with ease. However, the combined score of 143 points fell well short of the over/under line of 152.5. Both teams now turn their attention to the upcoming American Athletic Conference tournament.
