East Tennessee State at Wofford

Preview: East Tennessee State at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — Two teams with identical records and similar momentum will meet Sunday when the East Tennessee State Buccaneers visit the Wofford Terriers in a key Southern Conference men’s basketball matchup.

Both teams enter the Feb. 1 contest at 15-7 overall. The Buccaneers are looking to rebound from a narrow 90-88 home loss to Western Carolina on Thursday. The Terriers, meanwhile, are riding high after a dominant 81-55 road victory at Chattanooga that same night.

The game features a compelling backcourt matchup between two of the league’s top guards. East Tennessee State is led by Brian Taylor, who is coming off a stellar 24-point, 7-assist performance in the loss to Western Carolina. Over his last seven games, Taylor is averaging 14.3 points and 4.0 assists, including a 23-point outing in a prior loss at Western Carolina.

Wofford counters with Cayden Vasko, a steady playmaker who posted 11 points and five assists in the win over Chattanooga. Vasko has been a consistent force, averaging 10.9 points and 5.1 assists over his last seven contests. His versatility was on full display in a Jan. 10 game at Mercer, where he tallied 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.

East Tennessee State has shown resilience on the road this season, securing close victories at Chattanooga (67-66) and Samford (76-75) in January. However, the Buccaneers have also suffered road losses at Western Carolina and North Carolina.

Wofford has been strong at home, with its only recent stumble a 76-67 loss to Chattanooga on Jan. 14. The Terriers have since won three straight, including the decisive victory over that same Chattanooga team.

The outcome could hinge on which team controls the tempo. East Tennessee State will rely on Taylor’s playmaking and scoring, along with support from Cam Morris and Blake Barkley, who combined for 28 points in the last game. Wofford will look to Vasko to orchestrate an offense that saw four players score in double figures against Chattanooga, led by Chace Watley’s 14 points.

This is the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams this season, with the rematch set for Feb. 25 in Johnson City, Tennessee. Sunday’s winner will gain an early edge in the conference standings and valuable momentum for the stretch run.
