Temple at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Temple Owls and the Charlotte 49ers will look to build momentum heading into conference play when they meet in a nonconference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Halton Arena.

Temple (8-5) enters on a four-game winning streak, its longest of the season. The Owls are coming off a 65-61 home victory over Princeton on Dec. 22, where Jordan Mason scored 16 points and Aiden Tobiason added 12 points and four assists. Tobiason, a player to watch for the Owls, has been a consistent offensive force, averaging 14.8 points over his last five games, including a 19-point performance in a win at Davidson on Dec. 18.

Charlotte (6-7) snapped a two-game skid with an 88-76 overtime win against Illinois-Chicago on Dec. 21. Ben Bradford led the way with a career-high 26 points and nine rebounds. Bradford, the 49ers’ key player, has shown high scoring potential but has been inconsistent, tallying just three points in a loss to College of Charleston on Dec. 14 after an eight-point outing against Lafayette.

The game represents a final tune-up before American Athletic Conference play begins for both teams this weekend. Temple will host UTSA on Saturday, while Charlotte will host Wichita State.

Historically, Temple holds a 9-2 advantage in the series, but the teams have not met since 2013. This matchup renews a rivalry that will continue into the AAC schedule, as the teams are slated to play again in Philadelphia on Jan. 28.

The contest will hinge on backcourt play, pitting Temple’s steady Tobiason against Charlotte’s explosive Bradford. The Owls will aim to extend their win streak by exploiting Charlotte’s defensive struggles; the 49ers have allowed 74 or more points in six of their seven losses. Charlotte will need a strong defensive effort and a repeat of Bradford’s high-scoring form to protect its home court and even its season record.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
