Baylor Outlasts San Diego State in High-Scoring Affair
(Interstat) — In a high-octane offensive showcase, the Baylor Bears outlasted the San Diego State Aztecs 91 to 81 on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The victory improved Baylor’s record to 5-1 on the young season, while San Diego State evened its mark at 3-3.
The game was a tale of efficient offense, with Baylor’s superior execution and rebounding proving to be the difference. The Bears scored 91 points on just 70 possessions, posting an elite offensive rating of 129.5, while the Aztecs managed 81 points on 72 possessions for a rating of 112.4.
Baylor established control early, building a 40-36 halftime lead. The Bears then poured in 51 points in the second half to steadily pull away and secure the double-digit victory. The offensive attack was balanced and potent, with five players scoring in double figures.
Cameron Carr led all scorers for Baylor, contributing 17 points in his 35 minutes of action. He was complemented by a strong supporting cast, as Tounde Yessoufou added 18 points, Obi Agbim scored 16, Isaac Williams came off the bench to provide 13 points, and Dan Skillings finished with 11 points and a team-high 5 assists.
San Diego State, despite the loss, had a more distributed scoring effort. Reese Dixon-Waters, Darrell Harrington, and BJ Davis each tallied 12 points, while Sean Newman added 10 points and a game-high 6 assists.
The statistical sheet highlighted key areas where Baylor built its advantage. The Bears dominated the interior, outscoring the Aztecs 38-26 in the paint and, crucially, outrebounding them on the offensive glass 10 to 4. This led to numerous second-chance opportunities that sustained Baylor’s offensive flow.
While both teams shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, Baylor’s ability to get to the free-throw line was a significant factor. The Bears attempted 30 free throws, making 22, compared to San Diego State’s 17 attempts, of which they made 14. From beyond the arc, the Aztecs held a slight edge, making 11 of 26 attempts to Baylor’s 9 of 23.
Defensively, both teams were active, with Baylor recording 6 steals and San Diego State registering 5 steals and 3 blocks. Each team committed 9 turnovers, but the Aztecs were slightly more effective at converting those takeaways, scoring 17 points off turnovers to Baylor’s 12.
The game was a bounce-back performance for Baylor, which suffered its first loss of the season the previous night against Saint John’s. San Diego State was looking to build on a win against Oregon but was unable to contain Baylor’s multifaceted offensive attack.
Baylor’s next contest is at home against Sacramento State on Dec. 2. San Diego State returns home to face Utah Valley on Dec. 3.
