Alabama Overpowers Maryland in Las Vegas Showcase

LAS VEGAS (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower, the Alabama Crimson Tide overwhelmed the Maryland Terrapins 105 to 72 in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Wednesday night at T-Mobile Arena.

The Crimson Tide seized control from the opening tip and never relented, turning the neutral-site contest into a showcase of their high-octane attack before an announced crowd of 3,947.

Alabama’s backcourt duo of Labaron Philon and Aden Holloway proved unstoppable. Philon, a guard from Mobile, Ala., poured in 20 points and dished out six assists, while Holloway, from Charlotte, N.C., orchestrated the offense with a double-double of 17 points and 10 assists. Their combined efforts spearheaded an Alabama offense that operated with ruthless efficiency.

The game was effectively decided in the first half. Alabama raced out to a 13-point lead in the opening minutes and continued to build on it, heading into halftime with a commanding 49 to 29 advantage. The Crimson Tide shot a blistering 57.6 percent from the field in the opening period, while Maryland struggled to find any offensive rhythm, making just 12 of their 37 attempts.

Any hopes of a Maryland comeback were quickly extinguished after the break. Alabama opened the second half on a 14-6 run, pushing its lead to 28 points and cruising to the decisive victory.

The statistical disparity was stark. Alabama finished the game shooting 57.6 percent overall, connecting on 38 of 66 shots. They were nearly as potent from beyond the arc, hitting 14 of 31 three-point attempts. Maryland, by contrast, shot 36.8 percent from the field, making 28 of 76 shots, and just 9 of 27 from three-point range.

Alabama’s dominance was also evident in the paint, where they outscored Maryland 48 to 30, and in transition, where they held a 16 to 5 advantage in fastbreak points. The Crimson Tide also showcased a formidable interior defense, blocking nine Maryland shots, led by Aiden Sherrell’s five blocks. Sherrell, a forward from Detroit, also contributed 11 points.

For Maryland, Darius Adams was a bright spot, scoring 20 points. Pharrel Payne added 14 points and four assists, while Guillermo Del Pino Luque came off the bench to score 10 points. However, the Terrapins’ offense was plagued by inefficiency, managing only six assists as a team against nine turnovers.

The victory improved Alabama’s season record to 5-2, while Maryland fell to 4-3. The Crimson Tide’s offensive rating of 132.0 on 80 possessions underscored a near-flawless performance. Maryland’s offensive rating of 87.6 highlighted the struggles they faced against Alabama’s defensive pressure and offensive onslaught.

The game was part of a multi-team event in Las Vegas. Alabama entered as a pregame favorite and easily covered the spread, while the combined score of 177 points fell short of the over/under line.

Maryland will look to rebound on Tuesday, Dec. 2, when they host Wagner. Alabama returns to action the following day, Wednesday, Dec. 3, with a home game against Clemson.
