Houston Holds Off Notre Dame for Victory in Las Vegas

(Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by offensive inefficiency and relentless pressure, the Houston Cougars used a dominant first-half performance to secure a 66-56 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a non-conference men’s basketball game Wednesday afternoon at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 1,629, saw the Cougars improve their season record to 7-1, while the Fighting Irish fell to 5-3.

Houston seized control of the contest from the opening tip, building a substantial lead in the first half that ultimately proved insurmountable for Notre Dame. The Cougars led 39-25 at halftime, capitalizing on a stifling defensive effort that held the Fighting Irish to just 17 made field goals on 50 attempts for the entire game, a frigid 34 percent. Notre Dame was particularly hampered from beyond the arc, connecting on only 6 of 28 three-point attempts.

While Houston’s shooting was not much more efficient, finishing 20 of 59 from the floor, their ability to create second chances and capitalize at the free-throw line made the difference. The Cougars dominated the offensive glass, hauling in 12 offensive rebounds to Notre Dame’s 5, and outscored the Irish 18-16 from the charity stripe.

The contest was a battle of attrition, with both teams struggling to find any offensive rhythm. The teams combined for just six total assists, a stark indicator of the defensive intensity and offensive isolation that characterized the night. Houston committed only five turnovers, while Notre Dame gave the ball away eight times.

Notre Dame guard Markus Burton, a Mishawaka, Indiana native, led all scorers with 19 points in 40 minutes of action. He was the primary source of offense for the Fighting Irish, but received limited support. Freshman Jalen Haralson from Anderson, Indiana, provided a spark with 14 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line.

Houston’s attack was more balanced. Emanuel Sharp of Tampa, Florida, paced the Cougars with 17 points, knocking down three shots from three-point range. Milos Uzan, playing in his hometown of Las Vegas, added 15 points and was a steadying presence in the backcourt. Forward Joseph Tugler from Monroe, Louisiana, recorded a double-double with 10 points and was a force defensively with multiple rebounds and a block.

The second half saw Notre Dame attempt to mount a comeback, outscoring Houston 31-27 after the break. A layup by Burton with just over 38 seconds remaining cut the Houston lead to 64-60, but the Irish would get no closer. Uzan iced the game by sinking two free throws with 29 seconds left to seal the 10-point victory for the Cougars.

The game was a tale of two halves statistically, but the first-half deficit was too great for Notre Dame to overcome. The loss snaps a one-game winning streak for the Fighting Irish, who had defeated Rutgers 68-63 on Tuesday. Houston bounced back from a narrow 76-73 loss to Tennessee on Tuesday.

According to pregame analytics from Interstat, Houston was projected with a 97.8 percent probability to win and was installed as a 10.5-point favorite. The combined point total of 122 fell well under the over/under line of 134.

Notre Dame will look to regroup when it returns home to face Missouri on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Houston’s next contest is at home against Florida State on Saturday, Dec. 6.
