Akron Dominates Evansville in U.S. Virgin Islands Showcase

CHARLOTTE AMALIE WEST, U.S. Virgin Islands (Interstat) — In a dominant display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the Akron Zips routed the Evansville Purple Aces in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Sunday at the U.V.I. Sports and Fitness Center.

The Zips, who led by eight points at halftime, exploded in the second half, outscoring the Purple Aces by 30 points to turn a competitive contest into a lopsided victory. Akron improved its season record to 5-1, while Evansville fell to 3-4.

From the opening tip, Akron established control with a suffocating defense that forced Evansville into mistakes. The Zips capitalized with a 9-0 run to start the game, fueled by early steals and transition baskets. Eric Mahaffey ignited the run with a steal and a dunk, and Evan Mahaffey followed with another dunk off an assist from Amani Lyles, forcing an early Evansville timeout.

Evansville struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Akron’s aggressive scheme. The Purple Aces committed 18 turnovers, which the Zips converted into numerous easy scoring opportunities. Akron also tallied 10 steals, repeatedly disrupting Evansville’s offensive sets.

The first half saw Evansville briefly find a foothold, going on a 9-2 run of its own to close the gap. A key sequence involved AJ Casey, who scored on a tip-in, was fouled, and completed the three-point play. This brought the Purple Aces to within two points midway through the period.

However, Akron’s firepower from beyond the arc proved to be a decisive factor. The Zips connected on 13 three-pointers, with Bowen Hardman providing a significant spark off the bench. Hardman hit multiple threes in the first half, helping Akron rebuild its lead and enter the break with a 44-36 advantage.

Any hope of an Evansville comeback was extinguished in the second half as Akron’s offense reached another level. The Zips opened the period on a 15-4 run, effectively putting the game out of reach. The run featured a balanced attack, with Tavari Johnson hitting a three-pointer and Amani Lyles scoring inside with authority.

Akron’s ball movement was exceptional, resulting in 10 assists compared to just four for Evansville. The offensive execution was nearly flawless, as the Zips scored 97 points on just 71 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 137.0. In stark contrast, Evansville managed only 59 points on 69 possessions, an offensive rating of 85.6.

The Zips shot 56 percent from the floor, making 32 of 57 attempts. They were also effective from the free-throw line, converting 20 of 27 attempts. Evansville, meanwhile, shot 43 percent from the field and was hampered by a 4-for-19 performance from three-point range.

Individually, Akron was led by a trio of standout performers. Evan Mahaffey orchestrated the offense with 11 points and a game-high seven assists, while also contributing a block and a steal. Amani Lyles was a force in the paint, scoring 17 points and dishing out five assists. Bowen Hardman provided a massive scoring punch off the bench, leading all scorers with 19 points, largely on the strength of his three-point shooting.

For Evansville, AJ Casey led the way with 13 points. Keishon Porter and Bryce Quinet also scored 13 points apiece, but the Purple Aces could not match Akron’s depth or intensity for a full 40 minutes.

The game was part of a multi-team event in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Akron entered the contest coming off a high-scoring win against Iona, while Evansville was riding the momentum of a road victory at Oregon State. The Zips’ dominant performance, however, showcased their potential as they continue their non-conference schedule.

The announced attendance was 1,924. Akron was a heavy pregame favorite and easily covered the spread, outperforming statistical projections that gave them a over 90 percent chance to win. The Zips will look to continue their winning ways when they host Milwaukee on Saturday. Evansville returns home to face Ball State on Wednesday.
