Foxwell Leads Explosive Portland to Decisive Victory Over Cal State Fullerton

PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The Portland Pilots unleashed a dominant first-half offensive display and never looked back, cruising to a decisive 103-85 victory over the Cal State Fullerton Titans in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at a sparse Chiles Center.

A crowd of 1,118 watched as the Pilots (4-1) seized control early, building a 57-42 lead by halftime behind a blistering shooting performance. Portland’s efficiency was the story of the game, as they converted at a 63.5 percent clip from the field, including 11 of 21 from three-point range, while the Titans struggled to keep pace despite a valiant effort.

Portland’s offensive firepower was on full display from the opening tip. The Pilots exploded on a 16-2 run midway through the first half, turning a narrow 7-5 lead into a commanding 23-7 advantage. The run was fueled by a balanced attack and stifling defense that forced the Titans into difficult shots and turnovers.

Joel Foxwell, a guard from Melbourne, Australia, led all scorers with 24 points, orchestrating the Portland offense with precision. He was complemented by Garrett Nuckolls of Bullard, Texas, who added 20 points, and Mikah Ballew from Palmdale, California, who chipped in 18. The Pilots’ frontcourt also made a significant impact, with Timo George of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and James O’Donnell of Sydney, Australia, each scoring 14 points. O’Donnell also contributed two of Portland’s four blocks.

Cal State Fullerton (1-4), which has now lost four straight after a season-opening win, was led by Josh Ward’s 17 points. Landon Seaman, a forward from Vacaville, California, and Jaden Henderson, a guard from Sacramento, California, each scored 15 points. Henderson facilitated the Titans’ offense with a game-high eight assists.

Despite the final margin, the Titans showed resilience in the second half, matching the Pilots nearly basket for basket and even outscoring them 43-46 after the break. However, the first-half deficit proved too large to overcome against a Portland team that consistently answered every Cal State Fullerton push with a scoring run of its own.

The statistical disparity told the tale of the game. Portland’s offensive rating of 131.9 dwarfed Cal State Fullerton’s 105.5, illustrating the vast difference in efficiency. The Pilots also shared the ball effectively, finishing with nine assists and nine steals, while the Titans managed just six assists and turned the ball over 13 times.

Cal State Fullerton’s shooting woes extended to the free-throw line, where they made only 9 of 18 attempts. Portland was more reliable from the charity stripe, hitting 12 of 17.

The loss extends a difficult early-season stretch for the Titans, who have faced a challenging schedule. Portland, meanwhile, continues a strong start to its season, bouncing back emphatically from a 37-point road loss to Wyoming in its previous outing.

Cal State Fullerton is scheduled to face Saint Thomas (Minn.) on Saturday, again in Portland, as part of a multi-team event. The Pilots will host Northern Colorado on Saturday.
