High Point vs. Illinois-Chicago
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Interstat) — Two teams off to strong starts, the High Point Panthers and Illinois-Chicago Flames, will meet in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup Thursday in the Boardwalk Battle.
High Point (4-1) enters the game riding high after a dominant 93-50 victory over Canisius on Monday. Guard Rob Martin led the way with 17 points and eight assists in that win. The Panthers’ only loss this season came on the road against UAB, 91-74, on Nov. 14. They have won their other four games by an average of 33.5 points.
Illinois-Chicago (3-1) is coming off a 67-63 road win against Chicago State on Saturday. Andy Johnson paced the Flames with 16 points and five rebounds in that contest. UIC’s lone defeat was a narrow 76-73 loss at Oregon State on Nov. 7.
The neutral-site game at the Ocean Center will be the first of two for each team in the multi-team event. High Point’s high-powered offense, which has scored 85 or more points in four of its five games, will be tested by a Flames squad that has held two of its four opponents under 65 points.
The Panthers are led by Martin and forwards Owen Aquino and Scotty Washington, while the Flames counter with a balanced attack featuring Johnson, Mekhi Lowery and Rashund Washington.
