George Mason Uses Strong First Half to Defeat Saint Bonaventure in A-10 Matchup

FAIRFAX, Va. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive first-half surge, the George Mason Patriots secured a 71-58 victory over the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies in Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball action Saturday at EagleBank Arena.

The Patriots, improving to 22-7 overall, used a blistering offensive display in the opening period to build a cushion the Bonnies could never overcome. George Mason shot 48.1% from the field in the first half, including 7-of-15 from three-point range, to take a 39-27 lead into the break. That 12-point halftime advantage proved insurmountable for a Saint Bonaventure squad that struggled with offensive efficiency throughout the contest.

The most critical stretch of the game occurred midway through the first half. With George Mason leading 14-12, the Patriots unleashed a 17-2 run over a five-minute span to seize control. The surge was fueled by balanced scoring and stifling defense. Riley Allenspach, who finished with a team-high 21 points, hit a three-pointer, while Masai Troutman, who also scored 21, added a stepback jumper. Jahari Long, who orchestrated the offense with seven assists, capped the run with a three-pointer that extended the lead to 31-14. Saint Bonaventure managed just one field goal during this pivotal stretch, a layup by Frank Mitchell, and committed three turnovers as the Patriot defense tightened.

Saint Bonaventure, which fell to 15-14, never recovered from that first-half deficit. The Bonnies cut the lead to nine points on several occasions in the second half, the last time at 49-40 following a tip-in dunk by Mitchell. Each time, George Mason had an answer, usually from Troutman or Allenspach. A Troutman three-pointer with 10:30 to play pushed the lead back to 56-42, and a driving layup by Allenspach with 3:43 remaining gave the Patriots their largest lead at 68-52, effectively sealing the game.

The statistical sheet underscored George Mason’s offensive superiority. The Patriots scored 71 points on just 61 possessions, an offensive rating of 116.0, while Saint Bonaventure managed only 58 points on 62 possessions for a rating of 93.1. George Mason shot 48.1% overall (26-of-54) and an impressive 42.9% from beyond the arc (12-of-28). Saint Bonaventure, conversely, shot 37.5% (24-of-64) and a paltry 33.3% from the free-throw line (3-of-9), missing several opportunities to chip away at the lead.

Mitchell led the Bonnies with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, dominating the glass for six offensive boards. Dasonte Bowen added 16 points and Darryl Simmons scored 14 for Saint Bonaventure, which won the rebounding battle 42-31, including a 14-6 edge on the offensive glass. That effort, however, was negated by poor shooting and an inability to contain the Patriots’ perimeter attack.

Beyond the 21-point efforts from Allenspach and Troutman, George Mason received a steady performance from Long, who contributed 11 points to go with his seven assists. The Patriots’ ball movement, evidenced by a low total of just eight turnovers, consistently found open shooters against the Bonnies’ defense.

The game was a reversal of the teams’ previous meeting just four weeks prior, on Jan. 31, when George Mason needed a narrow 77-73 win in Olean. This time, the Patriots left little doubt on their home floor in front of 4,770 fans, using an early, explosive run to set the tone and cruise to a double-digit conference victory as they solidify their position near the top of the Atlantic 10 standings. Saint Bonaventure, meanwhile, sees its hopes for a winning regular season dented as it heads into its final two conference games.
