Golden Lions Edge Panthers in SWAC Thriller
PINE BLUFF, Ark. (Interstat) — In a game defined by razor-thin margins and critical plays in the final seconds, Arkansas-Pine Bluff edged Prairie View 84-82 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s basketball thriller Saturday night at the HPER Complex.
The Golden Lions (12-16, 9-6 SWAC) secured the victory on a pull-up jump shot by Quion Williams with 18 seconds remaining, capping a back-and-forth final minute that saw three lead changes. The Panthers (11-17, 8-7) had one final chance to tie or win, but Dontae Horne’s contested three-point attempt as time expired missed, and a last-ditch offensive rebound by Prairie View did not yield another shot before the buzzer.
The contest was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s offense operated with precision, scoring its 84 points on just 66 possessions for a stellar offensive rating of 126.3. The Golden Lions shot 58.5% from the field (31 of 53) and dominated inside, outscoring Prairie View 42-26 in the paint. Prairie View, despite scoring 82 points, required 71 possessions and finished with an offensive rating of 115.0. The Panthers kept pace largely through exceptional free-throw shooting, converting 25 of 28 attempts (89.3%).
Williams, a junior guard from Jonesboro, Arkansas, was instrumental for the home team, finishing with 20 points, five assists and a game-high four steals. His late-game heroics were set up by the interior dominance of Jaquan Scott and Milhan Charles. Scott, a forward from Dallas, scored 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting in just 23 minutes, while Charles, from Bristol, Connecticut, added 17 points and a key block.
Prairie View was carried by the spectacular scoring of Horne. The Memphis native poured in a game-high 32 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 performance from the free-throw line. Lance Williams added 18 points for the Panthers, and Joey Madimba contributed 16.
The game’s pivotal sequence began with just over a minute to play and Arkansas-Pine Bluff clinging to a 79-78 lead. Horne was fouled and calmly sank two free throws to put Prairie View ahead 80-79 with 1:21 left. On the ensuing possession, Quion Williams drew a foul and made both of his free throws to restore a one-point lead for the Golden Lions at 81-80.
After a Prairie View timeout, Horne was fouled again and again made both free throws, pushing the Panthers back in front 82-81 with 1:11 on the clock. Arkansas-Pine Bluff then ran its offense looking for the final shot. With the clock winding under 20 seconds, Williams created space near the foul line and connected on the jumper that ultimately decided the game.
Prairie View had one final timeout but chose to advance the ball quickly. Horne’s deep three-point attempt over a defender was off the mark, and Corey Dunning’s offensive rebound came as time expired.
The first half set the stage for the tight finish, with Arkansas-Pine Bluff taking a 45-40 lead into the break. The Golden Lions built that advantage by forcing 10 Prairie View turnovers in the opening period, converting them into 12 points. The Panthers, despite the turnovers, stayed close with efficient half-court offense, shooting 50% from the field in the first half.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s ball security and distribution were superior throughout, committing only 10 turnovers to Prairie View’s 14 and dishing out 11 assists to the Panthers’ five. The Golden Lions also recorded 11 steals, led by Williams and Trevon Payton, who had nine points and a game-high seven assists.
The victory completed a regular-season split for the two teams, as Prairie View had won the first meeting 73-61 on Jan. 12. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Arkansas-Pine Bluff entered the game with a 70.8% probability to win.
The announced attendance at the HPER Complex was 2,182.
With the win, Arkansas-Pine Bluff moves into a more secure position in the SWAC standings with three games remaining. Prairie View, meanwhile, sees its two-game winning streak snapped and will look to regroup for its final homestand next week.
