Campbell Leads Falcons Past Rockets in MAC Showdown

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (Interstat) — In a rivalry defined by narrow margins, the Bowling Green Falcons authored a decisive second-half statement on Saturday night. Led by a dominant performance from guard Javontae Campbell, the Falcons pulled away from the Toledo Rockets for an 80-70 victory in a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball game before a crowd of 4,167 at the Stroh Center.

The win avenged a one-point loss at Toledo just three weeks prior and improved Bowling Green’s record to 16-10 overall. Toledo, which had won five of its last six, fell back to .500 at 13-13.

The game’s pivotal stretch came early in the second half. After a tightly contested first half that saw Bowling Green take a slim 37-35 lead into the break, the Falcons erupted with a 12-2 run over the first four minutes. The surge was fueled by defensive intensity and efficient offense. Justin Thomas opened the half with a three-pointer, Troy Glover threw down a dunk, and Josiah Shackelford capped the run with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws, pushing the lead to 49-37.

Toledo, which never led in the second half, struggled to mount a sustained response. The Rockets cut the deficit to six points on several occasions, but each time Bowling Green had an answer, often from Campbell or Sam Towns. The Falcons’ offensive execution proved superior, as they scored 80 points on just 67 possessions for an offensive rating of 119.4, compared to Toledo’s 102.7 rating.

Campbell, a junior from Muskogee, Oklahoma, was the engine for Bowling Green. He played 38 minutes and finished with 19 points, four rebounds, and five assists, consistently breaking down the Toledo defense to create shots for himself and others. His backcourt mate, Sam Towns of Columbus, Ohio, provided crucial support with 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. The Falcons’ offensive balance was key, with Shackelford adding 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Toledo was led by the backcourt duo of Sonny Wilson and Leroy Blyden. Wilson, from Pontiac, Michigan, scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Blyden, from Detroit, contributed 13 points, four rebounds, and five assists. Will James added 10 points for the Rockets.

While the final margin was 10 points, the game was ultimately decided by Bowling Green’s ability to control the paint and capitalize on Toledo’s mistakes. The Falcons outscored Toledo 30-20 in the paint and converted 11 points off nine Rocket turnovers. Defensively, Bowling Green’s length, which produced six blocks, altered numerous shots at the rim and contested Toledo’s perimeter looks, holding the Rockets to 39.1% shooting from the field.

The Falcons also enjoyed a significant advantage from beyond the arc, shooting 11 for 21 (52.4%) compared to Toledo’s 10 for 24 (41.7%). This efficient shooting, combined with a 13-for-19 performance from the free-throw line, allowed Bowling Green to maintain a comfortable lead throughout the final 15 minutes.

Toledo’s last serious threat came with just over five minutes remaining when a Sonny Wilson floater brought the Rockets within 69-61. On the ensuing possession, however, Campbell found Sam Towns for a clutch three-pointer to push the lead back to 11, effectively sealing the outcome.

The victory keeps Bowling Green in the thick of the MAC race as the regular season enters its final weeks. The Falcons will look to build on this performance when they host Kent State on Tuesday. Toledo, meanwhile, will aim to regroup before hosting Eastern Michigan next Saturday.
