Chattanooga at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Interstat) — The Furman Paladins will look to complete a regular-season sweep and solidify their standing near the top of the Southern Conference when they host the Chattanooga Mocs on Sunday at Timmons Arena.

Furman (15-7, 5-3 SoCon) enters the matchup with momentum after a 78-73 home victory over Samford on Thursday. The Paladins have won three of their last four games. Chattanooga (9-13, 3-5), meanwhile, seeks to halt a three-game skid following an 81-55 loss to Wofford on Thursday.

The Paladins won the first meeting this season, 78-67, in Chattanooga on Jan. 7. In that game, Furman’s Charles Johnston scored 21 points. Johnston is coming off a dominant rebounding performance, grabbing 16 boards to go with eight points and three assists against Samford. Over his last five games, the forward is averaging 11.2 points and 7.6 rebounds.

Chattanooga will rely on guard Brennan Watkins, who has been a consistent scorer during conference play. He is averaging 10.9 points per game in SoCon matchups and scored 19 in a narrow loss to East Tennessee State on Jan. 21. In the first game against Furman, however, he was limited to three points in 18 minutes.

Furman’s offense, which put up 89 points in a win at UNC Greensboro last week, will test a Chattanooga defense that has allowed an average of 79.3 points during its current losing streak. The Paladins feature multiple scoring threats, as evidenced by Tom House (21 points) and Alex Wilkins (20 points) joining Johnston as key contributors in the win over Samford.

The Mocs have struggled on the road this season, with a 2-8 record away from home. Furman is 9-2 at Timmons Arena.

A win would help Furman keep pace in a tight conference race, while Chattanooga aims to salvage a split in the season series and climb back to .500 in league play.

Tipoff is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
