Cowboys Ride Hot Shooting, Bennett’s 22 Points Past Rams
BOSLER, Wyo. (Interstat) — Khaden Bennett’s sharpshooting from beyond the arc and a dominant second-half performance propelled the Wyoming Cowboys to a 68-57 victory over the Colorado State Rams in a Mountain West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at a packed Arena-Auditorium.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 6,384, turned decisively in the final 20 minutes after a competitive first half. Wyoming improved to 13-9 overall, while Colorado State fell to 12-10.
Bennett, a 6-foot-4 guard from Mansfield, Texas, was the catalyst for the Cowboys, scoring a game-high 22 points. His offensive outburst was fueled by a lethal performance from three-point range, setting the tone early and often. He connected on his first two attempts from deep in the opening minutes, sparking an initial surge that Colorado State struggled to counter.
The Rams, reliant on interior scoring, managed to stay within striking distance in the first half by leveraging their size advantage. They outscored Wyoming 36-14 in the paint for the game, with Kyle Jorgensen of Minneapolis contributing 13 points and Augustinas Kiudulas of Vilnius, Lithuania, adding 8 points off the bench. Colorado State took a brief lead late in the first period, but a Damarion Dennis three-pointer for Wyoming just before halftime gave the Cowboys a 27-23 edge at the break.
The second half belonged entirely to Wyoming. The Cowboys opened with a 13-4 run, extending their lead to 13 points and forcing the Rams into a reactive posture. Bennett continued his assault, and Dennis, a guard from San Antonio, provided crucial secondary scoring, finishing with 16 points. Wyoming’s offensive efficiency was stark, scoring 68 points on just 58 possessions for an offensive rating of 116.4, while Colorado State managed only 57 points on 63 trips, an offensive rating of 90.8.
The statistical disparity told the story of Wyoming’s strategic success. The Cowboys shot a blistering 12 for 25 from three-point range, a 48% clip, compared to a frigid 4-for-23 performance from deep by the Rams. Wyoming also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 18 of 24 attempts, while Colorado State attempted only 10 free throws, making seven.
Colorado State guard Jevin Muniz of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, orchestrated the Rams’ offense with a team-high 14 points and seven assists, but his efforts were undermined by his team’s collective shooting woes. The Rams shot just 39.7% from the floor overall and committed eight turnovers, which Wyoming converted into 10 points.
Wyoming’s backcourt control was further emphasized by Leland Walker of Indianapolis, who added 10 points and four assists, and Adam Harakow of Edmonton, Canada, who chipped in nine points, three assists, and a key block. The Cowboys’ defense also recorded five blocks and six steals, disrupting Colorado State’s rhythm.
The most important part of the game was Wyoming’s immediate and sustained explosion to start the second half. Coming out of halftime with a narrow four-point lead, the Cowboys quickly erased any doubt about the outcome. They scored on their first several possessions, stretching the lead to double digits and establishing a pace that Colorado State could not match. This decisive run, fueled by continued hot shooting and defensive stops, transformed a close contest into a comfortable Wyoming lead from which the Rams never recovered, despite several attempts to rally.
The loss extends a difficult stretch for Colorado State, which has now dropped three of its last four conference games. Wyoming, meanwhile, secured a key home victory as it looks to build momentum in the Mountain West standings.
Both teams continue conference play next week. Wyoming travels to face San Diego State on Tuesday, while Colorado State hosts San Jose State next Saturday. The two teams will meet again in Fort Collins on February 14.
