Butler Seeks Revenge Against Surging Saint John’s in Big East Rematch
NEW YORK (Interstat) — A surging Saint John’s looks to solidify its Big East standing and complete a regular-season sweep when it hosts a revenge-minded Butler team on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm (15-5, 6-1 Big East) have won six straight conference games, including a decisive 84-70 victory at Butler on Jan. 6. Saint John’s is coming off an 88-83 road win at Xavier on Saturday, fueled by a standout all-around performance from Dillon Mitchell. The veteran forward logged 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists in that victory, continuing his consistent play during the team’s hot streak.
Butler (13-7, 4-3) arrives in New York with momentum of its own, having won three consecutive games, most recently an 87-76 home win over Marquette. The Bulldogs’ resurgence has been powered by guard Finley Bizjack, who is averaging 24.8 points over his last four contests. He scored 28 points in the win over Marquette and had 21 in the earlier loss to Saint John’s.
The Jan. 6 matchup was controlled by the Red Storm, who shot 54% from the field and forced 14 Butler turnovers. Mitchell was a key facilitator in that win with six points and five assists.
This rematch features a contrast in styles. Saint John’s has showcased a high-powered offense during its win streak, scoring 90 or more points three times. Butler has relied on Bizjack’s scoring punch and improved defense, holding its last three opponents under 80 points.
A Butler victory would knot the conference records and mark a significant road resume boost. For Saint John’s, protecting its home court is crucial to keep pace near the top of the league standings.
Wednesday’s contest is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EST and will be televised on FS1. Following this game, Saint John’s travels to face DePaul on Feb. 3, while Butler returns home to host Georgetown on Jan. 31.
