Saint John’s Dominates Butler in Big East Showdown
NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive presence, the Saint John’s Red Storm delivered a decisive 92-70 victory over the Butler Bulldogs in a Big East Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at a sold-out Carnesecca Arena.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 14,361, was never in serious doubt as the Red Storm built a 14-point halftime lead and steadily expanded it after the break. The win improved Saint John’s to 16-5 overall, while Butler fell to 13-8.
From the opening tip, Saint John’s established control. Zuby Ejiofor won the jump ball and the tone was quickly set by the Red Storm’s interior dominance. An early sequence saw Ejiofor block a driving layup attempt by Butler’s Jamie Kaiser, leading to a transition opportunity that culminated in a Dillon Mitchell alley-oop finish. This pattern of rim protection and immediate offense became a theme, with Saint John’s blocking eight shots and converting defense into 11 fastbreak points.
The most important stretch of the game came in the opening ten minutes of the first half, where Saint John’s built a lead Butler could never threaten. After Butler’s Evan Haywood hit a three-pointer to cut an early deficit to 12-9, the Red Storm responded with an 11-2 run. The surge was fueled by their work in the paint, where they would ultimately outscore Butler 46-32. A Bryce Hopkins steal and dunk, followed by a Joson Sanon driving layup, pushed the lead to double digits at 20-11, forcing a Butler timeout. The Bulldogs struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Saint John’s length, committing six first-half turnovers and shooting just 29 points on a mix of contested attempts.
Saint John’s took a 43-29 lead into halftime, and any hopes of a Butler rally were extinguished early in the second period. The Red Storm opened the half on a 10-4 spurt, with Ian Jackson hitting a pair of free throws and Ejiofor scoring on a dunk and a hook shot. When Ejiofor assisted on a Mitchell layup to make the score 53-35 with 15:03 remaining, Butler called a full timeout, but the margin only grew from there. The Red Storm’s offensive rating of 144.5, fueled by 56.3% shooting from the field, proved insurmountable.
Ejiofor, a 6-foot-9 forward from Garland, Texas, was the central figure, finishing with 15 points, five assists and three blocks in 27 minutes, orchestrating the offense from the post and anchoring the defense. Ian Jackson, a guard from the Bronx, led all scorers with 18 points, adding three assists. Dillon Mitchell provided 14 points, four assists and three blocks in a team-high 36 minutes, while Joson Sanon added 13 points off the bench.
Butler was led by Michael Ajayi’s 19 points, though he was often challenged by the Red Storm’s shot-blockers. Evan Haywood and Jamie Kaiser each scored 12, and Finley Bizjack added 11. The Bulldogs were plagued by poor free-throw shooting, making only 15 of 30 attempts, and managed just three assists as a team against a stifling Saint John’s defense.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Saint John’s, which defeated Butler 84-70 in Indianapolis on Jan. 6. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Saint John’s entered the game with a 93.6% probability to win, a projection borne out by their comprehensive performance.
Butler, which had won three of its last four games including an upset of then-ranked Marquette, now looks to regroup at home against Georgetown on Saturday. Saint John’s, solidifying its position in the upper tier of the Big East, continues its conference schedule on the road at DePaul next Tuesday.
