Lipscomb at Duke
DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — The undefeated and fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils put their perfect record on the line Tuesday night when they host the Lipscomb Bisons at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke (10-0) has navigated a tough early schedule, including wins over then-Kansas, Arkansas, Florida and a road victory at Michigan State. The Blue Devils have won each game by an average of 24.2 points, with their closest contest a 67-66 nail-biter against Florida on Dec. 2.
Sophomore forward Cameron Boozer has been the catalyst, averaging 23.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists. He is coming off a 35-point performance at Arkansas and a 29-point game against the Gators. His versatility and efficiency have made him an early national player of the year candidate.
Lipscomb (6-4) enters on a five-game winning streak after a 1-4 start. The Bisons’ offense has found its rhythm during the streak, averaging 87.2 points per game. Their losses include a 105-61 defeat at Vanderbilt and a 92-77 setback at Mercer.
The Bisons are led by guard Mateo Esmeraldo, who is averaging 12.8 points and a robust 6.8 assists per game. He recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists at Marshall on Nov. 26 and scored 22 points at Southeast Missouri State. In Lipscomb’s most recent 92-58 rout of Alabama A&M, Esmeraldo had 14 points and six assists in just 21 minutes.
This marks the first-ever meeting between the programs. For Lipscomb, it is a daunting nonconference road test against a perennial powerhouse. For Duke, it is a final tune-up before a high-profile neutral-site clash with Texas Tech in New York and the start of Atlantic Coast Conference play.
The game tips off at 7 p.m. EST Tuesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke will wear its traditional white home uniforms, while Lipscomb will don purple.
