Duke Remains Unbeaten With Convincing Win Over Lipscomb
DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — The Duke Blue Devils, propelled by a dominant performance from sophomore star Cameron Boozer and an overwhelming advantage on the glass, methodically dispatched the Lipscomb Bisons 97-73 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at a sold-out Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The victory extended Duke’s perfect start to the season to 11-0, while Lipscomb fell to 6-5.
The most critical phase of the contest arrived not with a dramatic run, but with a sustained display of physical superiority that began from the opening tip and never relented. Duke’s decisive edge was established through relentless offensive rebounding, turning missed shots into repeated scoring opportunities and systematically wearing down the visiting Bisons. The Blue Devils hauled in 18 offensive rebounds, leading to a staggering 27 second-chance points, while Lipscomb managed just two offensive boards all night.
This fundamental disparity allowed Duke to build a comfortable lead despite a sloppy first half that featured 22 combined turnovers. The Blue Devils led 48-45 at halftime, but the margin felt tenuous as Lipscomb, led by guard Mateo Esmeraldo’s playmaking and forward Grant Asman’s scoring, hung tough.
Any hope of a Lipscomb upset was extinguished early in the second half as Duke tightened its defense and fully capitalized on its size. A 12-4 run out of the break, fueled by Boozer’s interior scoring and a transition dunk from Isaiah Evans, pushed the lead to 60-49 and forced a Lipscomb timeout. The Bisons never got the deficit back to single digits again.
Duke’s offensive rating of 116.2 points per 100 possessions starkly contrasted with Lipscomb’s 86.4, highlighting the efficiency gap created by Duke’s extra possessions and higher-percentage shots. The Blue Devils shot 52.2% from the field, while Lipscomb was held to 39.3%.
Cameron Boozer, a 6-foot-9 forward from Miami, was the game’s standout performer, scoring 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting and grabbing 11 rebounds for a double-double. He was instrumental in Duke’s interior dominance, consistently finishing through contact and cleaning up misses. His recent form continued after an 18-point effort in a road win at Michigan State.
Isaiah Evans added 16 points, three assists and a block for Duke, while Maliq Brown provided a major spark off the bench with 11 points and a game-high five offensive rebounds. Patrick Ngongba contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Lipscomb was led by Grant Asman, a 6-foot-10 forward from Kimberly, Wisconsin, who scored 18 points. Mateo Esmeraldo, a 6-foot guard from Monroe, Connecticut, directed the offense with 14 points and eight assists. Titas Sargiunas added 14 points, and Charlie Williams chipped in 11.
The game drew 9,314 fans to Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke entered as a heavy favorite, with betting markets installing the Blue Devils as 33.5-point favorites. The combined score of 170 points sailed over the pregame over/under line of 151.5.
Lipscomb will look to rebound at home against Blue Mountain on Saturday. Duke, continuing its homestand, will face a stiffer test when Texas Tech visits Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday.
