Florida Gulf Coast Tops Samford in Defensive Road Win
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive tenacity and offensive struggles, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles used a commanding first-half performance to secure a 77-62 victory over the Samford Bulldogs in a non-conference men’s basketball matchup on Wednesday night at the Pete Hanna Center.
A crowd of 2,173 watched as the Eagles built a lead they would never relinquish, stifling the Samford offense with a formidable interior presence and capitalizing on enough offensive opportunities to keep the Bulldogs at arm’s length throughout the contest.
The Eagles set the tone early, opening the game on a 7-0 run. Michael Duax of Florida Gulf Coast connected on a 3-pointer just 39 seconds into the game, and the visitors never looked back. While Samford’s Dylan Faulkner answered with a pair of early layups, the Bulldogs’ offense repeatedly faltered against the Eagles’ swarming defense, particularly near the rim.
Florida Gulf Coast’s defensive anchor, Isaiah Malone, was a disruptive force. The 6-foot-8 forward from Lagrange, Indiana, recorded four blocks, altering countless other shots and helping hold Samford to just 33.9% shooting from the floor for the game. His presence in the paint was complemented by Tristen Guillouette, who added three blocks of his own in just 11 minutes of action.
The Eagles closed the first half on a strong note, with JR Konieczny sinking a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to give Florida Gulf Coast a 41-33 lead at the break. The Bulldogs, despite a game-high 27-point effort from Jadin Booth, could not find a consistent rhythm. Booth, a 6-foot-2 guard from Omaha, Nebraska, was a bright spot for the home team, but he received limited support as the team shot a dismal 7 of 26 from beyond the arc and 13 of 24 from the free-throw line.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Every time Samford attempted to mount a challenge, the Eagles had an answer, often in the form of a key basket or a defensive stop. Florida Gulf Coast maintained a double-digit lead for much of the period, with their advantage never dipping below eight points.
Rahmir Barno led a balanced Eagles scoring attack. The 6-foot guard from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, finished with 16 points and three assists, providing steady backcourt leadership. Malone contributed 12 points and four blocks, while Jordan Ellerbee, also from Philadelphia, added 12 points and four assists off the bench. The Eagles shared the ball effectively, tallying seven assists to Samford’s six, and their defense was opportunistic, registering seven steals.
Samford’s offensive woes were encapsulated by their efficiency metrics. The Bulldogs scored just 62 points on 71 possessions, resulting in an offensive rating of 86.8. In contrast, Florida Gulf Coast was more effective with their opportunities, posting an offensive rating of 109.8 by scoring 77 points from 70 possessions.
Beyond Booth’s 27 points, Faulkner was the only other Bulldog in double figures, scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Keaton Norris of Samford dished out four assists.
The victory improves Florida Gulf Coast’s season record to 3-2, while Samford falls to 3-3. The Eagles will look to build on this defensive showcase as they prepare to host Oral Roberts on Monday. Samford, seeking to correct its offensive inconsistencies, hits the road for its next contest at New Mexico State on Friday.
The game’s outcome defied the pregame projections, as national statistical models had favored Samford with a 77.5% probability to win. The Bulldogs had also been installed as a 2.5-point favorite. The total score of 139 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 159.5, a testament to the defensive struggle that unfolded on the court.
