Georgia Remains Undefeated With Dominant Home Win Over Florida A&M
ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — The Georgia Bulldogs used a dominant defensive performance and a commanding advantage at the free-throw line to overpower the Florida A&M Rattlers 87-57 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Monday night at a half-full Stegeman Coliseum.
In a contest defined by stark statistical contrasts, the undefeated Bulldogs improved to 5-0 while the Rattlers remained winless at 0-4.
Georgia’s victory was built not from the perimeter, where they struggled mightily, but from an overwhelming interior presence and an ability to capitalize on Florida A&M’s mistakes. The Bulldogs converted 29 of 35 free-throw attempts, a staggering 82.9 percent, while the Rattlers managed only 8 of 14 from the line. Furthermore, Georgia scored 32 points off 22 Florida A&M turnovers, compared to just 7 points off turnovers for the visitors.
The Rattlers hung tough early, with Tyler Shirley and Anquan Boldin connecting from beyond the arc to keep the score close. A three-pointer from Boldin even brought Florida A&M within two points at 16-14 midway through the first half. However, Georgia responded with a 14-2 run, fueled by its defense and efficiency in the paint, to seize control. The Bulldogs closed the first half on another burst, taking a 44-22 lead into the break.
Georgia’s defense was the story of the game, amassing 13 blocked shots and 12 steals. The Bulldogs’ length and athleticism consistently disrupted Florida A&M’s offensive sets, forcing difficult shots and live-ball turnovers that often led to easy transition baskets. Georgia outscored the Rattlers 26-6 in fastbreak points and 48-26 in points in the paint.
Despite the lopsided score, the Bulldogs had a historically poor shooting night from three-point range, making only 2 of 26 attempts. It was a deficiency more than compensated for by their work inside and at the charity stripe.
Jake Wilkins led the Bulldogs with 14 points, four rebounds and five blocks in just 18 minutes of action, anchoring the team’s formidable defensive effort. Blue Cain recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Somto Cyril and Dylan James provided significant energy off the bench, scoring 12 and 10 points respectively. Cyril also added three blocks.
For Florida A&M, Anquan Boldin led all scorers with 16 points, while Jordan Chatman and Tyler Shirley each added 13. The Rattlers shot just 34.4 percent from the field and were hampered by the constant turnover issues.
Georgia maintained its comfortable lead throughout the second half, with the margin never dipping below 20 points. The Bulldogs’ depth and defensive pressure proved too much for the visiting Rattlers to overcome.
The announced attendance was 5,971.
Florida A&M will look for its first win of the season when it travels to face Jacksonville on Dec. 2. Georgia, continuing its strong start to the season, heads to Charleston, S.C., to face Xavier on Friday.
