Houston vs. Auburn
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — Two of the nation’s remaining unbeaten teams will clash Sunday when the Houston Cougars face the Auburn Tigers in a marquee nonconference men’s basketball showdown at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.
Both teams enter the contest with 3-0 records, though their paths to perfection have differed. Houston has dominated its opponents, winning by an average margin of 28.3 points. The Cougars are coming off a 78-45 rout of Oakland on Wednesday, powered by a 19-point, nine-assist performance from guard Kingston Flemings.
Auburn also boasts a high-powered offense, averaging 93.3 points per game after a 93-62 victory over Wofford on Tuesday. Keyshawn Hall led the Tigers with 20 points and six assists, while Elyjah Freeman added 21 points. The Tigers’ lone test was a 95-90 overtime win against Bethune-Cookman in their season opener.
The matchup pits Houston’s stifling defense, which has held opponents to just 50 points per game, against Auburn’s explosive scoring attack. The neutral-site game in Birmingham serves as a key early-season test for both programs before each heads to a high-profile tournament in Las Vegas next week.
