Houston Edges Auburn in Nail-Biter to Stay Undefeated

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — In a defensive slugfest befitting their reputations, the Houston Cougars escaped the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex with a narrow 73-72 victory over the Auburn Tigers in a non-conference men’s basketball thriller on Sunday.

A crowd of 15,623 watched as the Cougars improved to 4-0 on the young season, while Auburn suffered its first loss, falling to 3-1. The game was a back-and-forth affair that was not decided until the final possession.

Houston guard Kingston Flemings was the catalyst for the Cougars, delivering a masterful performance with 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds. The 6-foot-4 sophomore from San Antonio orchestrated the offense and made several critical baskets down the stretch to keep Houston in front. His backcourt mate, Emanuel Sharp, added 13 points.

The interior battle was dominated by Houston’s Chris Cenac. The 6-foot-11 forward from New Orleans was a force on both ends, scoring 18 points and grabbing nine rebounds, just shy of a double-double, while also altering numerous shots.

Auburn’s effort was led by the formidable duo of Keyshawn Hall and Tahaad Pettiford. Hall, a 6-foot-7 forward from Cleveland, recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, battling relentlessly in the paint. Pettiford, a 6-foot-1 guard from Jersey City, provided 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and was a disruptive force defensively.

Kevin Overton contributed 13 points and five rebounds for the Tigers, while Sebastian Williams-Adams and KeShawn Murphy each chipped in seven points.

The first half set the tone for a tight contest, with Houston taking a slim 39-35 lead into the break. The Cougars maintained their advantage through much of the second half, but Auburn refused to fade, consistently answering Houston’s runs.

The game’s final minute was a chaotic sequence of defensive stands and missed opportunities. With Houston clinging to a one-point lead, Auburn had multiple chances to take the lead or tie the game in the closing seconds. A critical block by Houston’s Kalifa Sakho on a Tahaad Pettiford attempt with two seconds left preserved the victory for the Cougars, as Auburn’s final shot at the buzzer was off the mark.

Statistically, the game was a tale of two styles. Houston controlled the paint, outscoring Auburn 34-30 inside, and capitalized more on mistakes, scoring 13 points off turnovers compared to Auburn’s nine. Both teams were even in fastbreak points with 12 apiece.

The win continues a strong start for Houston, which had previously defeated Oakland, Towson and Lehigh by comfortable margins. The Cougars face Rider at home on Thursday.

Auburn, which entered the game with decisive wins over Wofford and Merrimack after a season-opening overtime scare against Bethune-Cookman, will look to rebound at home against Jackson State on Wednesday.

The contest, which saw the combined score fall under the projected total, lived up to its billing as a hard-nosed, early-season test between two programs with high expectations.
