Oakland at Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Interstat) — The Michigan Wolverines opened their season with a dominant offensive showcase, overwhelming the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 121-78 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Monday night at a sold-out Crisler Center.
A crowd of 11,801 watched as the Wolverines put on a shooting clinic, particularly in a blistering first half where they built an insurmountable lead. Michigan scored 69 points before halftime, connecting on 19 of 35 three-point attempts throughout the game and finishing the night shooting 64.3 percent from the floor.
The Wolverines’ offense was a model of efficiency, scoring 121 points on just 80 possessions. Elliot Cadeau orchestrated the attack with a game-high 12 assists, frequently finding open shooters and cutters. His backcourt mate, Trey McKenney, led all scorers with 21 points and added four assists.
Michigan’s frontcourt was equally formidable. Morez Johnson Jr. was a force inside, scoring 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting in just 19 minutes of play. Freshman Aday Mara made a spectacular debut, recording a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while also swatting five shots. Will Tschetter and Yaxel Lendeborg provided significant contributions off the bench, scoring 16 and 12 points respectively, with Lendeborg adding three assists.
Oakland, which fell to 0-1, struggled to keep pace with Michigan’s offensive firepower. The Golden Grizzlies were led by Isaac Garrett’s 20 points, while Tuburu Naivalurua added 18 and Ziare Wells chipped in 14. Oakland shot a respectable 42.2 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from beyond the arc, but could not generate enough stops to mount a challenge.
The game was decided early as Michigan raced out to a 30-point halftime advantage. The Wolverines never relented, maintaining their offensive pressure in the second half to secure the 43-point victory.
The Golden Grizzlies will look to rebound on the road Friday against Purdue. Michigan, now 1-0, will travel to Detroit to face Wake Forest next Tuesday.
