Michigan Routs Oakland in Season Opener Behind Balanced Scoring Attack
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Interstat) — In a stunning display of offensive firepower to open the season, the Michigan Wolverines dismantled the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 121 to 78 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Monday night at a sold-out Crisler Center.
From the opening tip, the contest was a showcase of Michigan’s overwhelming efficiency. The Wolverines scored a staggering 69 points in the first half, leaving the Golden Grizzlies in a 31-point deficit before the break and effectively deciding the game’s outcome before halftime. Oakland managed 38 points in the first period and added 40 more in the second, but it was never nearly enough as Michigan cruised to a 52-point second half to secure the lopsided victory.
The statistical disparity was as vast as the final score. Michigan’s offensive execution was nearly flawless. The Wolverines scored their 121 points on just 80 possessions, translating to an elite offensive rating of 150.9. In stark contrast, Oakland’s offense, which produced 78 points from 76 possessions for a rating of 102.5, was completely overmatched.
Shooting percentages told the story of the blowout. Michigan was a model of efficiency, connecting on 45 of 70 attempts from the floor, a scorching 64.3 percent. Their prowess from beyond the arc was even more remarkable, as they drained 19 of 35 three-point attempts. Oakland shot a respectable 42.2 percent from the field, making 27 of 64 shots, and hit 11 of 26 from three-point range, but could not keep pace with the Wolverines’ torrent of scoring.
The dominance extended to nearly every facet of the game. Both teams secured four offensive rebounds, but Michigan’s defense was a formidable presence, recording seven blocked shots. Oakland did manage to force nine Michigan turnovers while committing eight of their own, and they also tallied six steals to Michigan’s three, but these small victories in hustle stats were rendered meaningless by the shooting clinic put on by the home team.
Individually, the Wolverines’ performance was a balanced and potent attack. Morez Johnson Jr. led all scorers with 24 points in just 19 minutes of action. Trey McKenney added 21 points and a team-high four assists in 27 minutes. The interior was commanded by Aday Mara, who posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds to go along with five blocked shots in his 19 minutes on the court.
The facilitation of the offense was masterfully handled by Elliot Cadeau, who dished out 12 assists while committing only a single turnover, orchestrating the high-powered attack with precision. Will Tschetter contributed 16 points, Nimari Burnett added 14, and Yaxel Lendeborg chipped in 12, underscoring the depth of scoring options for Michigan.
For Oakland, Isaac Garrett led the way with 20 points in 33 minutes. Tuburu Naivalurua was a bright spot with 18 points and five rebounds, while Ziare Wells added 14 points and a team-high six rebounds. Despite these efforts, the Golden Grizzlies could not counter the relentless waves of scoring from the Wolverines.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 11,801, was the season opener for both teams. With the win, Michigan begins its campaign with a record of 1-0, while Oakland starts 0-1. The result was largely anticipated, as Interstat’s ELO system had projected the Wolverines with a 96.40 percent probability to win.
Looking ahead, the Golden Grizzlies face a daunting immediate future, traveling to face Purdue on Friday before a matchup at Houston on Nov. 12. Their first home game is not until Nov. 15 against Defiance.
The Wolverines, meanwhile, will hit the road for their next test, facing Wake Forest in Detroit on Nov. 11 as part of a challenging non-conference slate that also includes upcoming games against Texas Christian, San Diego State and Auburn. The victory over Oakland serves as a powerful opening statement for a Michigan team that appears poised for a significant season.
