Oregon State Outlasts San Diego in Overtime at Home
CORVALLIS, Ore. (Interstat) — In a game defined by dramatic momentum swings and a relentless three-point assault from the visitors, the Oregon State Beavers ultimately outlasted the San Diego Toreros 92-82 in overtime Wednesday night at Gill Coliseum.
The victory, secured by a dominant 14-4 extra period, completed a regular-season sweep for Oregon State after a similarly narrow overtime win over San Diego just over three weeks prior. It improved the Beavers to 16-14, while the Toreros fell to 11-19.
The most critical phase of the contest was undoubtedly the final minute of regulation, a chaotic sequence that saw San Diego erase a six-point deficit to force overtime, only for Oregon State to seize immediate control in the extra session.
Trailing 78-72 with under 30 seconds to play, San Diego’s hopes rested on the long ball. Juanse Gorosito, the guard from Santa Fe, Argentina, found Toneari Lane for a clutch three-pointer with 28 seconds left. Following an Oregon State timeout, the Toreros’ pressure defense forced a turnover, and Adrian McIntyre fed Lane for another three, this one a step-back jumper that tied the game at 78 with 22 seconds remaining.
Oregon State had a chance to win in regulation, working the ball inside to its 6-foot-11 center Johan Munch of Copenhagen, Denmark, who converted a dunk with four seconds left for an 80-78 lead. San Diego, with no timeouts, rushed the ball upcourt and Vuk Boskovic of Bosnia & Herzegovina sank a deep, contested three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, stunning the crowd of 2,626.
The euphoria was short-lived for the Toreros. The Beavers dominated the overtime from the opening tip. Josiah Lake of Tualatin, Oregon, stole the ball on San Diego’s first possession and scored a driving layup. The Toreros went ice-cold, missing their first five shots of overtime and committing two turnovers. Oregon State, meanwhile, methodically pulled away at the free-throw line, making 8 of 10 attempts in the extra period while holding San Diego to just two field goals.
The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. San Diego lived by the three-pointer, attempting 43 and making 18. Lane led all scorers with 24 points, all coming from beyond the arc or the free-throw line, while Gorosito added 17 points, also on 5-of-13 three-point shooting. However, the Toreros’ reliance on the perimeter shot came at a cost; they attempted only seven free throws, making four.
Oregon State, conversely, attacked the paint and capitalized at the line. The Beavers shot 30 of 59 from the field and a decisive 22 of 26 from the free-throw line. They also won the assist battle just 4-11, but their offensive execution in key moments, particularly in overtime, proved superior.
Munch was a force inside for Oregon State, finishing with 19 points and several key offensive rebounds. Jorge Diaz Graham of Spain provided 17 points and three blocks, including two crucial denials in the first half. Lake orchestrated the offense with 15 points and nine assists, while Isaiah Sy of France chipped in 16 points.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with Oregon State taking a 35-32 lead into the break behind 10 early points from Munch. The second half saw San Diego’s shooting periodically bring them back, setting the stage for the frantic final minute.
For San Diego, the loss continued a pattern of narrow defeats, having now lost six of their last seven games. They will look to regroup on the road at Portland this Saturday. Oregon State, having won two straight, will travel to face Santa Clara, also on Saturday, aiming to build momentum as the regular season concludes.
