Preview: Washington Huskies at Illinois Fighting Illini
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — The surging Illinois Fighting Illini, riding an eight-game winning streak, will host the struggling Washington Huskies in a non-conference men’s basketball matchup at State Farm Center on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026.
Illinois (17-3), which vaulted into the Top 10 after a marquee road win at then-Purdue last Saturday, presents a formidable challenge for a Washington team (11-9) that has lost four of its last six games. The Huskies snapped a three-game skid with a 72-57 home victory over Oregon last Sunday.
The Fighting Illini are powered by star guard Keaton Wagler, who is playing at an All-American level. He poured in a career-high 46 points in the win at Purdue and has averaged 24.6 points over his last seven contests. His ability to score and facilitate has been the engine for one of the nation’s most efficient offenses.
Washington will counter with forward Jacob Ognacevic, who led the team with 12 points in the win over Oregon. The Huskies have shown resilience at home but are just 1-4 in true road games this season, a trend they must reverse against a ranked opponent in a hostile environment.
Illinois has dominated at home, boasting a 10-1 record in Champaign this season. Their only home loss was an 83-80 setback to Nebraska on Dec. 13. Since then, they have reeled off five consecutive home wins by an average margin of 21.2 points.
For Washington, containing Wagler will be the primary defensive focus, while finding consistent scoring beyond Ognacevic will be crucial. Guards Wesley Yates and Quimari Peterson, who combined for 21 points against Oregon, will need to provide backcourt production.
This game is part of the Big Ten’s scheduling alliance and offers Illinois a chance to bolster its NCAA tournament resume, while Washington seeks a season-defining road upset to turn its campaign around.
Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST Thursday. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
