Illinois Holds Off Washington in Big Ten Clash

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — In a game defined by rugged defense and offensive struggles, the Illinois Fighting Illini leaned on the steady brilliance of Keaton Wagler to grind out a 75-66 victory over the Washington Huskies in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball matchup Thursday night at a sold-out State Farm Center.

A crowd of 15,544 watched as the Illini, now 18-3 overall, used a decisive 9-0 run late in the second half to finally create separation from a persistent Huskies squad that fell to 11-10. The game, which fell well under the pregame over/under line, was a testament to defensive pressure, with both teams combining for just seven assists and committing 14 turnovers.

The most critical sequence unfolded with just over four minutes remaining and Illinois clinging to a 66-64 lead. Washington point guard Zoom Diallo, who had orchestrated much of the Huskies’ offense with a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists, committed a turnover that was stolen by Wagler. Although Illinois missed on the ensuing fast break, they secured an offensive rebound, leading to a Ben Humrichous three-pointer off a David Mirkovic assist, pushing the lead to five.

On the next possession, Diallo turned the ball over again, this time picked off by Illinois’ Zvonimir Ivisic. The Illini capitalized once more, as Humrichous buried another three-pointer, this time assisted by Tomislav Ivisic, to complete the 9-0 burst and extend the lead to 72-64 with only 1:33 left on the clock. Washington, which had shot just 26 of 58 from the field, could not muster a response, managing only a Diallo layup in the final minute as Wagler sealed the game with a three-pointer.

Wagler, a 6-foot-6 guard from Shawnee, Kansas, was the engine for Illinois, scoring 22 points and dishing out eight assists in 38 minutes. He consistently broke down Washington’s defense, either finishing at the rim or finding open teammates, and his two steals in the final minutes were pivotal. He was supported by a strong interior presence from David Mirkovic of Niksic, Montenegro, who added 19 points, and Ben Humrichous, who scored 14 key points off the bench, including the two critical late threes.

Washington was led by the duo of Diallo, the Tacoma native who managed his double-double despite eight turnovers, and 6-foot-11 German center Hannes Steinbach. Steinbach was a defensive force, recording 15 points, four blocked shots and anchoring the paint. Wesley Yates of Beaumont, Texas, added 13 points for the Huskies.

The game was a slog from the outset. Illinois led 33-26 at halftime despite shooting only 38 percent from the field in the opening period, as Washington connected on just one of its first 10 three-point attempts. The Huskies found more rhythm after the break, largely through Diallo’s penetration and Steinbach’s finishing, and managed to tie the game at 47-47 on a Yates three-pointer with 15:34 remaining.

Illinois responded with a 7-0 spurt, but Washington hung tough, cutting the deficit to two points on multiple occasions, the last at 66-64 following a Steinbach tip-in with 6:37 to play. The Huskies’ offense then went cold, missing their next four shots and committing three turnovers over the next five minutes, allowing Illinois to execute the game-deciding run.

Statistically, the game was won on the margins where Illinois excelled. The Illini converted Washington’s nine turnovers into eight points, while the Huskies managed only four points off five Illinois giveaways. Illinois also held a 12-9 advantage in offensive rebounds, leading to 11 second-chance points. Washington’s defense was notable, however, holding a significant 12-1 edge in fastbreak points and outscoring Illinois 34-28 in the paint behind Steinbach’s presence.

The victory extends Illinois’ winning streak to five games as they continue a formidable conference campaign. Washington, which had won two of its last three coming in, faces a quick turnaround, staying in the state to face Northwestern on Saturday. Illinois will hit the road for a matchup at Nebraska on Sunday.
