Central Arkansas Routs Stetson in ASUN Conference Matchup
CONWAY, Ark. (Interstat) — The Central Arkansas Bears used a dominant second-half performance to pull away from the Stetson Hatters for a 93-73 victory in an ASUN Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at the Farris Center.
Playing before an announced crowd of 782, the Bears improved to 7-8 overall, while the Hatters fell to 5-10.
The game’s decisive stretch came early in the second half. Leading 41-28 at halftime, Central Arkansas saw its advantage trimmed to eight points after Stetson’s Jamie Phillips opened the second period with a pair of free throws. The Bears responded with a 15-4 run over the next four minutes, fueled by their defensive pressure and efficient offense. The surge was capped by a 3-pointer from Harrison Beauchamp, assisted by Camren Hunter, which pushed the lead to 56-38 with 15:25 remaining. Stetson never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Central Arkansas’s offensive execution was superior throughout. The Bears shot 50.8% from the field and 40.6% from 3-point range, while Stetson managed 47.1% overall and 35.5% from beyond the arc. The Bears also capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, making 18 of 23 attempts compared to Stetson’s 14 of 21.
The Bears’ backcourt duo of Camren Hunter and Ty Robinson proved too much for the Hatters to handle. Hunter, the top star for Central Arkansas, filled the stat sheet with 21 points, four rebounds, five assists, a block and a steal. Robinson, a native of Hot Springs, Arkansas, added 20 points and four rebounds. Their combined 41 points paced a balanced Bears attack that saw five players score in double figures. Cole McCormick contributed 11 points and seven rebounds, while Truman Byrne and Harrison Beauchamp each added 11 points.
Stetson was led by Jamie Phillips, a 6-foot-5 guard from Winter Haven, Florida, who scored a game-high 22 points to go with four rebounds, two assists and a block. Ethan Copeland added 14 points, and Collin Kuhl of Holly Springs, North Carolina, posted 11 points and six rebounds.
Central Arkansas controlled the game’s tempo and key hustle categories, outrebounding Stetson 12-6 on the offensive glass and forcing 15 Hatters turnovers while committing only 10. The Bears also doubled Stetson’s assist total, 8-4, and steal total, 8-4.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair for the first 12 minutes before Central Arkansas began to create separation. With the score tied at 16, the Bears unleashed a 13-2 run, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Truman Byrne and a transition layup by Javion Guy-King following a steal. That spurt gave Central Arkansas a 29-18 lead, and they maintained a double-digit advantage for most of the remainder of the game.
The victory gives Central Arkansas a winning record in conference play and momentum heading into a road trip next week at Bellarmine and Eastern Kentucky. Stetson, which had won its previous game at North Alabama, looks to rebound at home against Lipscomb and Austin Peay.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Central Arkansas entered with a 68.1% probability to win and covered the pregame spread of 9.5 points. The total score of 166 surpassed the over/under line of 147.
