Oklahoma Routs Oral Roberts Behind Dominant Defense, Wague’s 20 Points
NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by suffocating defense and a relentless transition attack, the Oklahoma Sooners cruised to a 95-71 victory over the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in a non-conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at Lloyd Noble Center.
A season-high crowd of 5,765 watched as the Sooners exploited a staggering turnover differential, converting 18 Oral Roberts giveaways into 25 points while committing only three turnovers of their own. That defensive pressure was the cornerstone of the victory, allowing Oklahoma to build a comfortable lead in the first half and pull away decisively after halftime.
Oklahoma set the tone early, forcing two quick Oral Roberts turnovers that led to a Nijel Pack 3-pointer and a Pack floating jumper, establishing a 5-0 lead from which the Golden Eagles would never recover. The Sooners’ lead ballooned to 18 points late in the first half before settling at 42-24 at the break.
The second half offered more of the same, as Oklahoma’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency. The Sooners scored 53 points after intermission, consistently finding easy baskets in the paint, where they outscored Oral Roberts 46-24 for the game.
Oklahoma’s offensive execution was a model of efficiency. The Sooners and Golden Eagles each had 72 possessions, but Oklahoma’s offensive rating of 132.1 dwarfed Oral Roberts’ mark of 98.4. The Sooners shot 50.7 percent from the field, compared to 43.1 percent for the visitors.
The Sooners’ dominance was reflected across the stat sheet. They recorded 13 assists and 13 steals, showcasing both unselfish ball movement and disruptive defense. Oral Roberts managed just two assists against the constant pressure.
Mohamed Wague was a force for Oklahoma, leading all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting, often finishing emphatically at the rim. Nijel Pack provided a potent scoring punch with 18 points, while Tae Davis chipped in 13. The Sooners’ backcourt of Xzayvier Brown and Pack, along with reserve Jadon Jones, hounded Oral Roberts ball-handlers all night, contributing to the team’s steal total.
Oral Roberts was led by Ofri Naveh, who scored 13 points. Connor Dow added 12 points, and Yuto Yamanouchi-Williams came off the bench to contribute 11. The Golden Eagles showed more offensive life in the second half, scoring 47 points, but could never string together enough stops to threaten the Oklahoma lead.
The win improves Oklahoma’s record to 3-2 as they prepare to host Alcorn State on Sunday. Oral Roberts falls to 2-4 and will look to rebound on the road at Florida Gulf Coast on Monday. The game played out largely as expected, with Oklahoma covering the pregame spread as a 24.5-point favorite.
