Razorbacks Overwhelm Longhorns in High-Scoring Affair
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering offensive onslaught from the opening tip, the Arkansas Razorbacks delivered a commanding statement Wednesday night, overwhelming the Texas Longhorns 105-85 in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball clash before a raucous crowd of 19,200 at Bud Walton Arena.
The most important part of the game was its inception. Arkansas seized control immediately and never relented, building a staggering 22-point halftime lead that Texas could never realistically threaten. The Razorbacks’ first-half performance was a masterclass in efficient, high-octane offense, scoring 56 points on a scorching 64% shooting from the field and a devastating 7-of-11 from three-point range. This explosive start rendered the Longhorns’ more competitive second half, where they were outscored by only two points, largely academic.
Arkansas’s victory was fueled by a historic backcourt performance from sophomore guard Darius Acuff Jr. and a dominant inside-out display from forward Trevon Brazile. Acuff, a Detroit native, orchestrated the rout with a double-double of 28 points and 13 assists, consistently breaking down the Texas defense and creating easy opportunities. Brazile, a 6-foot-10 junior from Springfield, Missouri, matched Acuff’s 28 points, adding three blocks and showcasing his versatility by hitting three-pointers and finishing emphatically at the rim. This breakout performance came after a quiet stretch where he had scored just 29 total points in his previous three games.
The Razorbacks’ offensive numbers were staggering. They shot 58.3% from the field for the game and an exceptional 57.9% from beyond the arc. They also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 24 of 30 attempts. Defensively, Arkansas protected the rim with seven blocks and generated eight steals, converting those into easy transition baskets that fueled their early surge.
Texas, which fell to 18-12 overall, struggled to match Arkansas’s firepower or find consistent defensive stops. The Longhorns shot a respectable 49.3% from the field but were hampered by poor free-throw shooting, converting only 14 of 27 attempts. Sophomore forward Matas Vokietaitis, a 7-footer from Lithuania, led Texas with 21 points, while Tramon Mark added 18 and Dailyn Swain contributed 16 points and six assists. However, the Longhorns managed only six assists as a team, highlighting their offensive stagnation against Arkansas’s active defense.
The Razorbacks’ supporting cast provided crucial contributions. Guards D.J. Wagner and Meleek Thomas scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, while forward Billy Richmond filled the stat sheet with eight points, three assists, and three blocks.
Arkansas improved to 22-8 with the victory, solidifying its postseason resume. The win also served as a powerful bounce-back from a 34-point road loss to Florida in their previous outing. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Arkansas entered with a 75.3% probability to win and covered the pregame spread of -7 with ease. The total score of 190 far exceeded the over/under line of 167.5.
Texas will look to regroup when it hosts Oklahoma on Saturday. Arkansas travels to face Missouri the same day.
