Saint John’s Dominates Villanova in Big East Showdown

NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a commanding display of efficiency and defensive pressure, the Saint John’s Red Storm delivered a decisive 89-57 victory over the Villanova Wildcats in a Big East Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at a sold-out Carnesecca Arena.

A crowd of 19,812 watched as the Red Storm, fueled by a dominant first half and a masterful performance from center Zuby Ejiofor, avenged a loss from earlier in the season and solidified their position near the top of the conference standings. Saint John’s improved to 23-6 overall, while Villanova fell to 22-7.

The game was effectively decided in the opening 20 minutes. Saint John’s raced out to a 48-23 halftime lead, shooting 57.6% from the field while forcing Villanova into 10 turnovers, which the Red Storm converted into 13 points. The Wildcats, by contrast, managed just 23 points on 30% shooting in the half, struggling to find any offensive rhythm against an active Saint John’s defense that recorded seven steals and four blocks before the break.

Ejiofor, a 6-foot-9 junior from Garland, Texas, was the orchestrator of the Red Storm’s attack. In 30 minutes, he compiled a stat line of 16 points and 10 assists, showcasing his versatility as a passer from the high post. He also added three blocks, anchoring the defense. His connection with fellow junior Ian Jackson was particularly potent; Jackson, a Bronx native, scored 19 points, with 15 coming in the first half, and added three steals.

The most pivotal sequence of the game occurred late in the first half, stretching Saint John’s lead from manageable to overwhelming. Leading 32-23 with just over six minutes remaining, the Red Storm unleashed a 16-0 run that broke the game open. The surge was sparked by defensive intensity, leading to Villanova turnovers and transition opportunities. It included a 3-pointer from Ejiofor, a driving layup from Jackson, a dunk from Rubén Prey, and capped by another Jackson layup off an Ejiofor assist. When the dust settled, Saint John’s led 48-23, and the second half became a formality.

Villanova never threatened after intermission, as Saint John’s maintained its offensive efficiency and defensive pressure. The Red Storm finished the game shooting 52.5% from the field and 53.3% from 3-point range, while holding Villanova to 37% shooting overall. Saint John’s also dominated the hustle categories, out-assisting Villanova 11-4, out-stealing them 11-4, and committing only eight turnovers to the Wildcats’ 16.

Oziyah Sellers provided crucial support for Saint John’s with 14 points, while Dillon Mitchell added eight points and solid interior defense. For Villanova, forward Duke Brennan led the way with 12 points, and guards Devin Askew and Bryce Lindsay each scored 10, but the Wildcats’ offense was consistently out of sync.

The victory gives Saint John’s a season split with Villanova, having lost in Philadelphia on Jan. 17. The Red Storm’s offensive rating of 122.9 points per 100 possessions starkly contrasted with Villanova’s 78.5, underscoring the disparity in performance on this night. Saint John’s now looks ahead to a home game against Georgetown on Tuesday, while Villanova will try to regroup on the road at DePaul next Wednesday.
