Oklahoma Sooners Ride Efficient Offense to Road Win Over LSU Tigers

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — The Oklahoma Sooners used a dominant first-half performance and a combined 41 points from guards Xzayvier Brown and Nijel Pack to secure an 83-67 road victory over the LSU Tigers in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at the Maravich Assembly Center.

A crowd of 7,019 watched as the Sooners (15-13, 7-8 SEC) built a lead they would never relinquish, capitalizing on efficient offense and disruptive defense to snap a two-game skid and hand the Tigers (15-14, 6-10) their third loss in four outings.

The most important stretch of the game came early, as Oklahoma established control with a 14-0 run that spanned just over three minutes in the first half. Leading 9-7, the Sooners erupted. The sequence began with Brown converting a four-point play after being fouled on a made 3-pointer, which was immediately followed by a Pack steal that led to a flagrant foul call on LSU’s Max Mackinnon. Brown sank both free throws, and on the ensuing possession, Pack found Mohamed Wague for a dunk. Pack then capped the burst with a 3-pointer, pushing the lead to 20-7 and forcing LSU into a timeout with 16 minutes remaining in the half.

LSU struggled to recover from that early deficit. The Tigers shot just 22 of 63 from the field for the game, a 34.9% clip, and connected on only 6 of 23 attempts from beyond the arc. Oklahoma, meanwhile, was surgical in its execution, posting an offensive rating of 124.7 by scoring 83 points on just 67 possessions. The Sooners shot 47.5% from the floor and were a near-perfect 17 of 18 from the free-throw line.

Brown, a guard from Philadelphia, led all scorers with 20 points in 32 minutes, showcasing his ability to score at all levels. Pack, from Indianapolis, added 21 points and a team-high four assists, orchestrating the offense and hitting timely shots to stifle any potential LSU rallies. Dayton Forsythe provided a crucial spark off the bench with 13 points.

LSU was led by Max Mackinnon’s 17 points, but the Australian guard needed 17 shots to reach that total. Michael Nwoko added 11 points, while PJ Carter and Pablo Tamba each chipped in 10. The Tigers’ interior defense, anchored by Robert Miller’s four blocks, kept them within striking distance for stretches, but their offensive inconsistencies proved too great to overcome.

Oklahoma took a 41-33 lead into halftime and maintained a comfortable margin throughout the second half. Every time LSU threatened to cut the lead to single digits, the Sooners responded. A key sequence occurred with just under 10 minutes left in the game when, leading by 10, Oklahoma scored on consecutive possessions via a Wague layup and a Pack 3-pointer to push the advantage back to 15 and effectively seal the outcome.

Wague, a forward from the Bronx, finished with 10 points, three blocks and was a force defensively, altering numerous shots at the rim. Oklahoma’s defense held LSU to an offensive rating of 98.5 and forced nine turnovers while committing only eight.

The win moves Oklahoma to 15-13 overall and provides momentum as they head into the final week of the regular season. The Sooners will host Missouri on Tuesday before traveling to face Texas on Saturday. LSU, now 15-14, faces a quick turnaround with a trip to Auburn on Tuesday followed by a home game against Texas A&M on Saturday. Both teams will be looking to improve their positioning for the upcoming SEC tournament.
