Balanced Georgia Tops LSU in SEC Road Win
BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a Southeastern Conference clash defined by offensive efficiency and a decisive closing run, the Georgia Bulldogs secured a significant road victory, defeating the LSU Tigers 83-71 on Saturday night at a packed Maravich Assembly Center.
The game’s most critical sequence arrived late in the first half, transforming a tight contest into a lead the Bulldogs would not relinquish. With LSU holding a 37-33 advantage after a Max Mackinnon layup with just over two minutes remaining before halftime, Georgia unleashed a stunning 9-0 burst to close the period. The run was fueled by defensive pressure and transition offense. Jeremiah Wilkinson ignited the surge with a 3-pointer, followed by a Jordan Ross steal that led to a Wilkinson dunk. After another Ross steal, Wilkinson converted again at the rim. A flagrant foul on LSU’s Pablo Tamba then allowed Georgia’s Somto Cyril to sink two free throws, capping the run and sending the Bulldogs into the locker room with a 42-37 lead and palpable momentum.
Georgia carried that energy into the second half, opening with a Blue Cain 3-pointer to extend the lead to eight. While LSU’s Marquel Sutton and Michael Nwoko worked to keep the Tigers within striking distance, the Bulldogs consistently answered every push. A key factor was Georgia’s superior perimeter shooting and ability to capitalize on LSU’s mistakes. The Bulldogs connected on 10 of 25 attempts from beyond the arc, while LSU struggled, making only 5 of 23. Georgia also converted 13 LSU turnovers into 23 points.
The Bulldogs’ offensive balance proved overwhelming. Kanon Catchings led Georgia with 23 points, showcasing his range with multiple 3-pointers. Jeremiah Wilkinson provided a crucial scoring punch with 18 points, and Somto Cyril anchored the interior with 12 points and relentless effort on the glass. Point guard Marcus Millender orchestrated the attack with a game-high six assists.
LSU, which fell to 14-9 overall, was led by a heroic effort from Max Mackinnon. The guard from Brisbane, Australia, poured in a game-high 26 points and dished out four assists, relentlessly attacking the basket and drawing fouls. Marquel Sutton added 14 points for the Tigers, who were efficient from the free-throw line, making 20 of 24 attempts, but could not overcome their cold shooting from deep.
Georgia’s offensive execution was reflected in its advanced metrics. The Bulldogs scored 83 points on just 66 possessions, an offensive rating of 125.0, a mark of elite efficiency. LSU managed 71 points on 65 possessions for a rating of 108.6. The Bulldogs also won the battle inside, edging LSU in points in the paint 38-36, and matched the Tigers’ intensity on the offensive boards with 14 each.
The victory improved Georgia’s record to 17-6, providing a resilient response after a 92-77 home loss to Texas A&M in its previous outing. The Bulldogs demonstrated an ability to win in a hostile road environment, a key trait for any team with postseason aspirations. LSU, coming off an overtime win at South Carolina, saw its two-game win streak snapped and will look to regroup quickly with a challenging SEC schedule ahead.
The announced attendance was 7,270. Georgia’s next contest is at home against Florida on Wednesday. LSU will host Arkansas on Tuesday.
