Portland at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. (Interstat) — A dramatic overtime result from earlier this month sets the stage for a West Coast Conference rematch Wednesday when the Pacific Tigers host the Portland Pilots at the A.C. Spanos Center.

The Tigers (14-8), seeking to solidify their position in the conference standings, will be looking for revenge after a narrow 90-89 overtime loss at Portland on Jan. 8. The Pilots (10-12) aim to sweep the regular-season series and climb back toward .500.

Portland’s success hinges heavily on the play of dynamic guard Joel Foxwell, who is coming off a 27-point performance in a loss to Saint Mary’s last Saturday. Foxwell was instrumental in the first meeting with Pacific, logging 42 minutes and scoring 27 points with seven assists in the Pilots’ overtime victory. Over his last eight games, he is averaging 18.8 points and 7.4 assists.

Pacific counters with guard TJ Wainwright, who is coming off a 38-minute, 15-point effort in a gritty 56-54 win over Seattle. Wainwright was held to 11 points in the loss at Portland but has shown explosive scoring ability, including a 25-point outing against San Diego on Jan. 10. His backcourt matchup with Foxwell will be pivotal.

The Tigers have been stronger defensively at home, allowing an average of just 66.2 points in their last five games in Stockton. They will need to contain a Portland offense that averages 78.2 points in conference play but has been inconsistent on the road.

Pacific enters with more momentum, having won four of its last five games. Portland has struggled for consistency, alternating wins and losses over its past six contests. The Tigers’ frontcourt, led by Isaac Jack (14 points, two blocks vs. Seattle), could pose problems for a Portland interior defense that has been vulnerable.

Wednesday’s contest is the only scheduled meeting between the teams in Stockton this season. Following this game, Pacific travels to face San Francisco on Saturday, while Portland prepares for a road test at Washington State.
