Long Island Holds Off Fairleigh Dickinson in Northeast Conference Matchup
HACKENSACK, N.J. (Interstat) — A dominant first-half defensive performance and a relentless attack in the paint carried the Long Island Sharks to a 66-59 victory over the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights in a Northeast Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Rothman Center.
Long Island, which improved to 11-7 overall and 4-1 in the NEC, built a commanding 31-25 halftime lead by stifling the Knights’ offense. Fairleigh Dickinson, which fell to 5-13 and 1-4, shot poorly from the field in the opening period and was outscored 52-28 in the paint for the game. The Sharks also capitalized on transition opportunities, holding a 16-4 advantage in fastbreak points.
The most important stretch of the game came late in the first half, when Long Island turned up its defensive pressure to create a decisive separation. Leading 23-21 with under four minutes to play before halftime, the Sharks unleashed a game-altering 8-0 run fueled entirely by their defense and interior play. Mason Porter-Brown ignited the sequence with a steal, leading to a Jomo Goings dunk. On the next Knights possession, Porter-Brown stole the ball again, setting up another Goings dunk. After a Fairleigh Dickinson turnover, Greg Gordon finished the burst with a powerful dunk off an assist from Goings, pushing the lead to 31-21 with 1:52 remaining in the half.
That flurry proved insurmountable for the Knights, who never recovered to pull even in the second half. Every time Fairleigh Dickinson mounted a challenge, the Sharks answered with a basket inside or a key play from their backcourt. Long Island’s backcourt duo of Malachi Davis and Greg Gordon controlled the tempo, combining for 31 points and 10 assists. Davis, a guard from Toronto, played 37 minutes and finished with 15 points and seven assists, while Gordon, from Chicago, added 16 points in 39 minutes.
Forward Jomo Goings provided a critical interior presence for the Sharks, scoring 13 points and adding two steals and a block. His defensive activity alongside Porter-Brown, who contributed nine points and two blocks, anchored the paint defense that limited Fairleigh Dickinson’s high-percentage looks.
The Knights were led by Eric Parnell with 15 points and Arthur Cox with 13 points off the bench. Cyril Martynov, the 7-foot center from Barrie, Canada, added nine points but was often challenged by Long Island’s physicality inside. Fairleigh Dickinson managed to outscore Long Island 34-35 in the second half but could not overcome the early deficit, struggling to generate consistent offense outside of sporadic three-point shooting.
Long Island’s defensive focus was evident in the turnover battle, as they converted 12 points off Knights miscues while allowing only five points off their own turnovers. The Sharks’ ability to protect the ball and force the action near the rim was the defining characteristic of the contest.
With the win, Long Island continues a strong start to conference play, having won four of its first five NEC matchups. The Sharks will look to carry this momentum into a quick turnaround, visiting Le Moyne on Monday. Fairleigh Dickinson, still seeking consistency, will host Wagner on Monday as it attempts to climb the conference standings.
An announced crowd of 425 watched the game at Rothman Center. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Long Island entered the game with a 70.10 percent probability to win.
