Islanders Defeat Lions in Southland Conference Matchup
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — A dominant first-half defensive performance and a balanced scoring attack propelled Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 68-56 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in a Southland Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at the American Bank Center.
The Islanders, improving to 10-8 overall, built a commanding 20-point halftime lead and withstood a second-half push from the Lions to secure the win before a crowd of 2,011. Southeastern Louisiana fell to 5-13.
The most critical phase of the game was the opening period, where Texas A&M-Corpus Christi established control. The Islanders held Southeastern Louisiana to just 18 first-half points on 7-of-26 shooting, forcing 10 turnovers and blocking five shots. Offensively, the Islanders were efficient, shooting 48% from the field to build a 38-18 advantage at the break. Nicholas Shogbonyo, a guard from Arlington, Texas, keyed the early surge with 11 of his team-high 14 points in the first half, including a pair of three-pointers in the opening minutes that set the tone.
Southeastern Louisiana emerged from halftime with renewed energy, opening the second period on a 15-4 run to cut the deficit to single digits. The Lions, led by forward Isaiah Gaines of Pensacola, Florida, who scored a game-high 18 points, continued to chip away. A three-pointer by Makhi Myles with 2:23 remaining brought Southeastern Louisiana within six points at 62-56, marking the closest the game had been since the opening minutes.
The Islanders responded decisively to the threat. On the ensuing possession, Bryson Wheatfall of Humble, Texas, hit a crucial floating jumper in the lane to push the lead back to eight. Following a Lions turnover, Shogbonyo was fouled and sank two free throws. The Islanders then sealed the game at the foul line, making four more free throws in the final 35 seconds while preventing Southeastern Louisiana from scoring again.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s defense was the story, finishing with eight blocks and eight steals. Leo Torbor of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, contributed three of those blocks, while the interior presence of Cenker Evran of Adana, Turkey, and Franck Yetna of Paris, France, altered numerous shots. The Islanders capitalized on their opportunities, scoring 16 points off turnovers and outscoring the Lions 16-8 at the free-throw line in the second half.
For Southeastern Louisiana, Gaines added two blocks to his 18-point effort in 32 minutes. Jeremy Elyzee of Hialeah, Florida, scored 12 points, and Peter Hemschemeier of Paderborn, Germany, chipped in 13 points and four assists. The Lions won the battle in the paint, 34-32, and scored 14 fast-break points to the Islanders’ 11, but were ultimately undone by 17 turnovers and a 4-for-12 performance from three-point range.
Alongside Shogbonyo’s 14 points, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi received contributions across the roster. Wheatfall scored nine points with two blocks, Yetna added eight points, and DA Houston of Houston, Texas, also scored eight. The Islanders shot 46.9% from the field for the game and assisted on eight of their 23 made baskets.
The win moves Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to 2-1 in conference play, while Southeastern Louisiana drops to 1-2 in the Southland. The Islanders host McNeese State on Monday, while the Lions travel to face Texas-Rio Grande Valley the same night.
