Morehead State Holds Off Tennessee Tech Rally in OVC Matchup

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant opening act and a frantic, desperate finish, the Morehead State Eagles weathered a furious second-half rally from Tennessee Tech to secure a 76-70 victory in Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Eblen Center.

The Eagles, who led by as many as 17 points in the first half, saw their comfortable cushion evaporate completely in the final minutes before making critical plays down the stretch to snap a two-game skid and improve to 9-10 overall. The Golden Eagles, who mounted a 41-point second-half offensive surge, fell to 7-12 with the loss.

The most pivotal sequence of the contest came in the game’s final 13 seconds, with Morehead State clinging to a 73-70 lead. After Tennessee Tech’s Malik Ferguson missed a driving layup that would have cut the deficit to one, Morehead State’s Davion Cunningham secured the defensive rebound and was immediately fouled. Cunningham, a 6-foot-3 guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, sank the first free throw to push the lead to four and, after missing the second, the Eagles’ defense held firm as time expired to seal the win.

That dramatic finish was necessitated by a remarkable turnaround. Morehead State controlled the first half utterly, leveraging a significant advantage from beyond the arc and on the offensive glass to build a 38-29 halftime lead. The Eagles hit 5 of 13 three-point attempts before the break, compared to just 1 of 6 for the Golden Eagles, and hauled in 11 offensive rebounds that led to 11 second-chance points.

Tennessee Tech’s comeback was fueled by an aggressive shift to attack the interior. After scoring just 28 points in the paint in the first half, the Golden Eagles poured in 32 in the second, relentlessly driving to the basket. They chipped away at the lead throughout the period, finally drawing even at 59-59 on a Mekhi Cameron layup with 3 minutes, 54 seconds remaining. The game saw three ties in the final four minutes, but Morehead State never surrendered the lead.

George Marshall led the Eagles with 16 points, including two crucial three-pointers during the second half when Tennessee Tech’s pressure was at its peak. Anouar Mellouk, a 6-foot-8 forward from Amsterdam, Netherlands, provided a vital interior presence with 12 points and a game-high 7 offensive rebounds as part of a 16-rebound team effort on the offensive glass. Josiah LeGree came off the bench to add 13 points, all in the first half, sparking the early surge with three three-pointers.

For Tennessee Tech, Dani Pounds was a force, scoring 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half to ignite the rally. Mekhi Cameron added 12 points, and Malik Ferguson finished with 10. The Golden Eagles shot a much-improved 48.1% from the field in the second half but were ultimately undone by their 3-for-12 shooting from three-point range for the game and 15-of-22 performance at the free-throw line.

Morehead State’s efficiency proved decisive. Despite both teams having 64 possessions, the Eagles posted an offensive rating of 119.6 points per 100 possessions, significantly outperforming Tennessee Tech’s 108.6. The Eagles also won the turnover battle, committing only six giveaways while forcing seven.

A crowd of 1,175 watched as Morehead State swept the season’s first meeting between the teams. The two programs will meet again in Kentucky on Feb. 12.

Morehead State, which entered the game having lost two straight including an overtime thriller at Tennessee State, will look to build on the win when it hosts Western Illinois on Thursday. Tennessee Tech, which was coming off a home loss to Southern Indiana, will try to regroup on the road at Lindenwood, also on Thursday.
