Saint Thomas (Minn.) at North Dakota State

Preview: Summit League Showdown Features Top Contenders

FARGO, N.D. (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season matchup in the Summit League men’s basketball race is set for Saturday when the North Dakota State Bison host the Saint Thomas Tommies at Scheels Arena.

Both teams enter with momentum and nearly identical strong records. North Dakota State (15-5, 4-0 Summit) sits atop the conference standings and is riding a five-game winning streak. Saint Thomas (14-4, 3-0) is just a half-game back and has won its last five contests as well.

The game features a compelling backcourt duel between two of the league’s premier guards. Saint Thomas is led by Nick Janowski, who is coming off a 23-point performance in an 82-71 road win at Oral Roberts on Jan. 10. Over his last five games, Janowski is averaging 18.4 points and 3.8 assists, including a 31-point, 7-rebound effort in a win over Denver.

North Dakota State counters with Trevian Carson, a consistent force who has scored in double figures in 12 consecutive games. Carson is averaging 15.3 points and 3.9 assists per game this season. In the Bison’s most recent victory, a 76-65 win over South Dakota State on Wednesday, he contributed 14 points and four assists.

The Tommies boast one of the nation’s most efficient offenses, averaging 86.2 points per game and shooting over 50% from the field. Their 99-86 win over South Dakota on Jan. 7 highlighted their potent attack.

North Dakota State has found its stride with a balanced approach, winning its conference games by an average of 13.5 points. Their defense will be tested by the high-scoring Tommies. Key contributors include Treyson Anderson, who scored 20 points against South Dakota State, and Damari Wheeler-Thomas.

This contest marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams this season. They are scheduled to meet again in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Feb. 26.

Saturday’s winner will gain a crucial advantage in the conference standings as the season nears its midpoint. For Saint Thomas, a victory would signal their legitimacy as a Summit League title contender in just their fourth season at the Division I level. For North Dakota State, it represents an opportunity to defend their home court and solidify their position as the team to beat.
