Memphis Uses Strong First Half to Defeat Southern Illinois

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive struggles and defensive pressure, the Memphis Tigers secured a much-needed 74-58 victory over the Southern Illinois Salukis in a non-conference men’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at FedExForum.

A crowd of 9,681 watched as the Tigers, improving to 2-4, used a dominant first-half performance to build a cushion that the Salukis could never seriously threaten, despite a sloppy second half from the home team. Southern Illinois fell to 3-4 with the loss.

The game was decided in the opening period, where Memphis exploded for 42 points while holding Southern Illinois to 29. The Tigers shot efficiently from the floor, connecting on 25 of 58 attempts for the game, including 8 of 22 from beyond the arc. Their offensive execution was starkly superior, posting an offensive rating of 103.5 points per 100 possessions.

Southern Illinois, conversely, endured a night of profound shooting woes. The Salukis managed to make only 18 of 58 field goal attempts, a frigid 31 percent. Their long-range shooting was particularly disastrous, finishing 2 of 15 from three-point territory. Compounding their problems, Southern Illinois was anemic from the free throw line, converting just 20 of 33 opportunities. Their offensive rating of 80.9 highlighted the difficulty they faced in generating efficient scoring against the Memphis defense.

The Tigers set the tone early, opening the game on a 7-0 run with baskets from Zach Davis, Dug McDaniel and Thierno Sylla. Southern Illinois struggled to find any offensive rhythm, and Memphis capitalized, stretching its lead throughout the half. A key sequence late in the period saw Quante Berry hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final minute, the second at the 21-second mark, to send the Tigers into halftime with a commanding 42-29 advantage.

While the second half was less impressive for Memphis, as they were outscored 32-29, their first-half lead proved insurmountable. The Salukis never managed to cut the deficit to single digits, as every mini-run was answered by a Memphis basket.

The Tigers’ backcourt duo of Dug McDaniel and Julius Thedford led the scoring charge. McDaniel, a guard from Washington, D.C., orchestrated the offense with 15 points and a team-high five assists in 32 minutes. Thedford, a hometown product from Memphis, also scored 15 points, adding a block and two steals in 24 minutes of action.

A significant spark came from Aaron Bradshaw off the bench. The 7-foot-1 center from Rahway, New Jersey, provided a crucial interior presence in the second half, scoring all of his 14 points after the break. His activity on both ends helped Memphis maintain its control of the game.

For Southern Illinois, the offensive burden was shared, but no player could find a hot hand. Rolyns Aligbe, a forward from Minneapolis, contributed nine points, two blocks and two steals. Jalen Haynes of Lewisville, Texas, added 10 points, but the team’s collective shooting struggles overshadowed individual efforts.

Defensively, both teams were active, with Memphis recording 11 steals and five blocks to Southern Illinois’ eight steals and four blocks. The Tigers also won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding the Salukis 10-5 on the offensive end, leading to second-chance points that further stifled any comeback attempts.

The victory provided a respite for Memphis, which had lost four of its first five games, including narrow defeats to Wake Forest and Purdue in its previous two outings. Southern Illinois, coming off a split in its last two games, will look to regroup after a performance where offensive efficiency was its primary undoing.

According to pregame analytics from Interstat, Memphis was projected with a 95.1 percent probability to win. The Tigers also covered the pregame spread of -10.5 points. The total score of 132 fell significantly under the over/under line of 159.5, a testament to the defensive intensity and Southern Illinois’s shooting struggles.

Memphis is scheduled to host New Orleans on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Southern Illinois returns home to face Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday, Nov. 29.
