Stephen F. Austin at Incarnate Word

SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, one of the nation’s winningest teams, look to continue their dominant season when they visit the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Monday night at McDermott Convocation Center.

The Lumberjacks (26-4) enter the contest having won 10 of their last 11 games, including a 77-56 road victory over Houston Christian on Saturday. Their only loss in that stretch was a narrow 77-73 defeat to New Orleans on Feb. 23. Stephen F. Austin, a pregame 8-point favorite, previously defeated Incarnate Word 56-46 in Nacogdoches on Jan. 12.

Incarnate Word (12-18) snapped a four-game skid with a 72-60 home win over Lamar on Saturday. The Cardinals have struggled for consistency, particularly on defense, allowing 80 or more points in six of their last ten outings.

A key matchup will feature two of the Southland Conference’s top guards. Stephen F. Austin is led by Keon Thompson, who is averaging 19.9 points over his last eight games. Thompson scored 32 points in a win at Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Feb. 14 and has been a model of efficiency, dishing 38 assists against just 12 turnovers in that span.

Incarnate Word counters with Tahj Staveskie, a volume scorer who logged 40 minutes in three of his last five games. Staveskie erupted for 33 points in a win at Texas A&M-Commerce on Feb. 21 but was held to just three points in a loss at Northwestern State last Monday.

The Lumberjacks’ defense, which has held opponents under 70 points in seven of their last ten games, will be tested by a Cardinals’ offense that scored 82 and 72 points in its two most recent wins. The over/under for the game is set at 144 points.

Monday’s contest concludes the regular season for both teams ahead of the Southland Conference Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
