McNeese State at Stephen F. Austin
Top-Contending Southland Foes Set for Showdown in Nacogdoches
NACOGDOCHES, Texas (Interstat) — A pivotal Southland Conference men’s basketball clash is set for Monday night as the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks host the McNeese State Cowboys at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Both teams enter with impressive records and championship aspirations. Stephen F. Austin (19-3 overall, 8-1 Southland) sits atop the conference standings, while McNeese State (18-4, 7-2) is close behind in a tightly contested race.
The matchup is a quick rematch of a Jan. 5 thriller in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where McNeese State edged Stephen F. Austin 66-64. Cowboys guard Larry Johnson scored 18 points in that victory, part of a dominant recent stretch. Over his last five games, Johnson is averaging 22.2 points, including a 26-point, 8-rebound, 5-assist performance in a win over New Orleans on Jan. 24.
The Lumberjacks, however, have been nearly flawless since that narrow loss, winning seven consecutive games. Guard Keon Thompson has spearheaded the surge, averaging 20.6 points over his last five contests. He erupted for 27 points in a win over Northwestern State on Jan. 27 and scored 26 with 6 rebounds and 5 assists in a victory at Lamar on Jan. 24.
McNeese State is coming off a tense 64-63 road win at Lamar on Saturday, where Johnson led the way with 22 points. Stephen F. Austin arrives home following a commanding 85-58 victory over Southeastern Louisiana, a game in which Thompson contributed 15 points in just 20 minutes of play.
The game features the conference’s top two scoring defenses. Stephen F. Austin leads the Southland, allowing just 62.7 points per game in conference play, while McNeese State is second, yielding 66.2 points per contest.
Monday’s result will have significant implications for the Southland regular-season title chase. A win by the visiting Cowboys would forge a virtual tie at the top, while a victory for the Lumberjacks would give them a two-game cushion and the head-to-head tiebreaker should the teams finish with identical records.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST. Following this matchup, Stephen F. Austin will host Lamar on Saturday, Feb. 7. McNeese State returns home to face Incarnate Word on the same date.
