Mississippi Valley State at Prairie View
Preview: Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at Prairie View Panthers
HEMPSTEAD, Texas (Interstat) — The Prairie View Panthers will look to build on their first conference win and extend the misery of the struggling Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils when the teams meet in a SWAC men’s basketball matchup Saturday at the William Nicks Building.
The Panthers (6-9) are coming off an 89-85 road victory at Southern on Monday, powered by a season-high 32 points from guard Tai’Reon Joseph. Joseph has been a consistent offensive force, averaging 26.0 points over his last six games, including a 34-point outing at LSU.
Conversely, the Delta Devils (1-15) enter on a 10-game losing streak following a 71-51 home loss to Alabama A&M on Monday. Their lone win this season came against non-Division I Champion Christian on Nov. 18. Guard Michael James has been a bright spot during the skid, averaging 20.0 points per game over the same six-game stretch Joseph has shined, including a 27-point performance against Tarleton State.
Prairie View’s non-conference schedule featured several power conference opponents, including losses to Texas A&M, LSU and Missouri. The Panthers’ offense, led by Joseph and backcourt mate Dontae Horne (21 points vs. Southern), will test a Valley State defense that has allowed 86.3 points per game during its current losing streak.
Mississippi Valley State, which has not won a Division I game this season, has struggled offensively outside of James, failing to reach 70 points in 12 of its 16 games. The Delta Devils’ challenging early schedule included blowout losses at Oklahoma, West Virginia, Florida State and Kansas State.
Saturday’s contest opens a critical early SWAC stretch for both teams. Prairie View aims to establish home-court advantage before a two-game road trip next week. Mississippi Valley State desperately seeks a conference win to stem the tide before returning home next weekend.
Tip-off is set for Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026, in Hempstead.
