Panthers Edge Delta Devils in SWAC Thriller

HEMPSTEAD, Texas (Interstat) — In a game defined by missed opportunities and a frantic final sequence, the Prairie View Panthers escaped with a 70-69 victory over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils in a Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at William Nicks Building.

The contest, played before an announced crowd of 264, was a struggle for both teams offensively but culminated in a dramatic finish that saw the Panthers overcome a five-point halftime deficit. Mississippi Valley State, which led 37-32 at the break, had a chance to win in the closing seconds but could not get a final shot to fall.

The most critical sequence unfolded in the final 15 seconds. With Prairie View clinging to a 69-68 lead after a free throw by Joey Madimba, Mississippi Valley State’s Delkedric Holmes committed an offensive foul on the ensuing inbounds play, turning the ball back over to the Panthers with just five seconds remaining.

Prairie View’s Madimba was fouled again and made the first of two free throws to extend the lead to 70-68. He missed the second, but the Delta Devils, out of timeouts, secured the rebound. In the scramble, Mississippi Valley State’s Michael James was fouled on a desperation heave near midcourt with three-tenths of a second left, sending him to the line for two shots with a chance to tie or win.

James made the first free throw to cut the deficit to one. His second attempt, however, rimmed out. The Panthers’ Hassane Diallo secured the defensive rebound as time expired, sealing the narrow victory for the home team.

The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. Mississippi Valley State shot better from the field, hitting 44.6% of its attempts compared to Prairie View’s 41.2%, and also connected on a higher percentage from three-point range. The Delta Devils also dominated the glass, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to Prairie View’s six, which led to a 28-22 advantage in points in the paint.

Those positives were undone by turnovers and poor free-throw shooting. The Delta Devils committed 16 turnovers, which the Panthers converted into 18 points. More critically, Mississippi Valley State went just 12 for 19 from the foul line, a 63.2% clip. Prairie View, despite shooting only 21 of 51 from the field, attempted 36 free throws, making 22, and outscored the Delta Devils by 10 points at the charity stripe.

Prairie View’s defense was a key factor, registering eight blocks and six steals. Cory Wells was a defensive anchor with four blocks and also contributed 14 points and five assists. Tai’Reon Joseph led all scorers with 23 points for the Panthers, while Lance Williams added 14 points, five assists and a block.

Mississippi Valley State was carried by its top two scorers. Daniel Mayfield, a 6-foot-8 forward from Toccoa, Georgia, scored 20 points and grabbed multiple offensive rebounds. Michael James, a guard from Byhalia, Mississippi, led the Delta Devils with 19 points, including the crucial free throw in the final second. Lamont Sams added 11 points.

The loss extended a difficult season for Mississippi Valley State, which fell to 1-16 overall. The Delta Devils have lost 10 consecutive games since their only win in early November. Prairie View improved to 7-9 with the win, which was its second in three conference games.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Prairie View entered the game with a 91.1% probability of winning. The Panthers will look to build on the narrow conference win when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday. Mississippi Valley State continues its road trip at Texas Southern on Monday, seeking to end its extended losing streak.
