Wildcats Ride Strong First Half to Victory Over Aggies

DAVIDSON, N.C. (Interstat) — In a display of offensive efficiency and interior dominance, the Davidson Wildcats pulled away from the North Carolina A&T Aggies for a 90-74 victory in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday afternoon at a packed Belk Arena.

A crowd of 2,795 watched as the Wildcats improved to 6-1 on the young season, while the Aggies fell to 3-2.

Davidson set the tone early, establishing a commanding lead in the first half that North Carolina A&T could never fully overcome. The Wildcats shot a blistering 56 percent from the floor, converting 31 of their 55 attempts, and controlled the paint with a 44-26 scoring advantage. Their offensive execution was nearly flawless, scoring 90 points on just 69 possessions for an elite offensive rating of 131.1.

The Aggies, by contrast, finished with an offensive rating of 111.7, a respectable figure that was simply outmatched by Davidson’s firepower. North Carolina A&T struggled from the free-throw line, making only 18 of 30 attempts, a 60 percent clip that hampered their ability to close the gap.

Davidson’s Josh Scovens, a 6-foot-6 guard from Greensboro, North Carolina, led a balanced Wildcats attack with 21 points and three assists. He was complemented by Sam Brown, who came off the bench to provide 13 points, and the versatile frontcourt presence of 7-foot center Ian Platteeuw from Barcelona, Spain, who tallied 10 points and a game-high six assists. Nick Coval also chipped in 11 points for the Wildcats.

North Carolina A&T was led by a stellar performance from Lewis Walker. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound forward from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, poured in 22 points, showcasing his scoring ability at all three levels. Trent Middleton added 12 points and four assists for the Aggies, while Bryson Ogletree contributed 11 points.

Despite the final margin, the game featured a competitive start. Walker opened the scoring for the Aggies with a stepback jumper, and a three-pointer from Ogletree gave North Carolina A&T an early 5-2 lead. Davidson responded with a 10-0 run, capped by a Sam Brown three-pointer, to seize control and never relinquish it.

The Wildcats built their first-half lead to as many as 13 points, heading into the break with a 47-38 advantage. Davidson’s ball movement and ability to capitalize on mistakes were key differentiators; they committed only six turnovers while forcing 10 from the Aggies, leading to a 14-7 edge in points off turnovers.

Any hope of an Aggies comeback was extinguished early in the second half. Davidson opened the period on an 8-2 run, punctuated by a three-pointer from Scovens and a driving layup from Parker Friedrichsen, pushing their lead to 15 points and forcing a North Carolina A&T timeout. The Wildcats maintained a double-digit lead for the entirety of the second half, with their advantage ballooning to as many as 18 points.

Davidson’s depth and rebounding prowess were also on full display. They out-rebounded the Aggies 35-26 and grabbed nine offensive boards, leading to 13 second-chance points. Manie Joses provided a strong defensive presence off the bench for the Wildcats, recording two blocks.

The Aggies will look to rebound on the road against Charlotte on Wednesday. Davidson, meanwhile, continues its homestand by hosting The Citadel next Thursday.
