Dominant Texas A&M Routs Manhattan in High-Scoring Affair
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — In a dominant display of offensive firepower, the Texas A&M Aggies overwhelmed the Manhattan Jaspers 109-68 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at a raucous Reed Arena.
A crowd of 7,545 watched as the Aggies seized control from the opening tip and never relented, turning the contest into a showcase of efficient scoring and defensive pressure. The game was effectively decided in the first half, as Texas A&M built an insurmountable 55-27 lead by halftime, shooting a blistering percentage from the field and capitalizing on a flurry of Manhattan turnovers.
The Aggies’ offensive performance was a model of efficiency. They scored 109 points on just 77 possessions, a staggering offensive rating of 141.4, while shooting 39 of 67 from the floor. Their long-range assault was particularly devastating, as they connected on 18 of 37 attempts from three-point range. The Aggies also converted Manhattan’s 15 turnovers into 24 points and outscored the Jaspers 40-26 in the paint and 14-3 on fast breaks.
Manhattan, by contrast, struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against the Aggies’ defense. The Jaspers scored 68 points on 74 possessions, an offensive rating of 91.9, and shot 24 of 55 from the field. While they found some success from beyond the arc, hitting 9 of 20 three-point attempts, their efforts inside were stifled, and they were hampered by their own mistakes.
Texas A&M was led by a spectacular performance from Ruben Dominguez. The sophomore from Puerto Real, Spain, poured in 30 points in just 27 minutes of action, connecting on a series of deep three-pointers that repeatedly extinguished any flicker of momentum from the Jaspers. He was a perfect complement to backcourt mates Rylan Griffen and Marcus Hill. Griffen, a Dallas native, added 17 points and six assists, while Hill from Rockford, Illinois, contributed 19 points.
The Aggies’ ball movement was crisp throughout, with Jacari Lane of Huntsville, Alabama, directing the offense effectively, dishing out seven assists to go with his 12 points. The depth of the Texas A&M roster was on full display, with Josh Holloway adding six points and six assists, and Rashaun Agee and Jamie Vinson controlling the interior, combining for 16 points and numerous rebounds.
For Manhattan, Terrance Jones of Trenton, New Jersey, provided a bright spot, leading the Jaspers with 13 points. Marko Ljubicic from Zagreb, Croatia, added 11 points, and point guard Devin Dinkins from Washington, D.C., managed seven points and six assists while battling the Aggies’ relentless defensive pressure.
The tone was set early. After a brief 5-5 tie, Texas A&M unleashed a 26-6 run over a nine-minute span in the first half, fueled by a barrage of three-pointers from Dominguez and Griffen, along with easy baskets generated from steals. Manhattan committed eight turnovers in the first half alone, which the Aggies converted into easy transition opportunities, building a lead that swelled to 28 points by the break.
Any hope of a second-half comeback for the Jaspers was quickly dashed. Texas A&M continued its offensive onslaught, with Dominguez and Hill combining for several quick scores to push the lead past 30 points, allowing Aggies coach to empty his bench for the final minutes.
The victory improves Texas A&M’s season record to 4-2 as they look ahead to a home game against Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday. The loss drops Manhattan to 3-3 on the year. The Jaspers will return home to host Wagner next Wednesday as they seek to rebound from the lopsided defeat.
