Nevada Rallies Past Fresno State in Second Half
RENO, Nev. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive grit and offensive droughts, the Nevada Wolf Pack used a dominant second-half performance to pull away from the Fresno State Bulldogs for a 69-59 victory in a Mountain West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at a sold-out Lawlor Events Center.
A crowd of 10,032 watched as the two teams battled to a 28-28 stalemate through the first 20 minutes, a half characterized by missed shots and physical play. The game’s complexion shifted decisively after halftime, with Nevada outscoring Fresno State 41-31 in the second period to secure the win and improve to 17-7 overall. Fresno State fell to an even 11-11.
The most critical stretch of the game came early in the second half, as Nevada transformed a tight contest into a comfortable lead. With the score tied at 30, the Wolf Pack unleashed a 15-4 run over a five-minute span. The surge was fueled by defensive pressure that generated turnovers and contested shots, coupled with timely scoring from multiple sources. Vaughn Weems and Elijah Price converted free throws, Corey Camper and Tayshawn Comer hit three-pointers, and Kaleb Lowery added a layup during the pivotal run that gave Nevada a 45-34 advantage with 14:33 remaining.
Fresno State, which had hung tough largely on the strength of DeShawn Gory’s playmaking, could never fully recover. The Bulldogs struggled to find consistent offense outside of Gory, shooting just 35.8% from the field for the game and 31% from three-point range. Nevada, while not much more efficient from the floor at 38.6%, controlled the game through superior work on the glass and at the free-throw line. The Wolf Pack held a commanding 12-5 edge in offensive rebounds, leading to 12 second-chance points, and made 19 of 25 free throws compared to Fresno State’s 12 of 16.
Gory, a guard from Victorville, California, led all scorers with 17 points and added four assists in 37 minutes for Fresno State. David Douglas contributed 13 points and Jake Heidbreder also scored 13 for the Bulldogs, but the team’s offensive rating of 92.8 on 64 possessions underscored their struggles to generate clean looks against Nevada’s defense.
The Wolf Pack showcased a balanced attack, with four players reaching double figures. Weems, from Federal Way, Washington, and Camper, from Little Rock, Arkansas, each scored 15 points. Camper added three assists while Weems had a block and two steals. Point guard Tyler Rolison of Los Angeles orchestrated the offense with 11 points and five assists, and Elijah Price of Long Beach provided a key interior presence with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Nevada’s defensive effort was comprehensive, tallying seven steals and three blocks while holding Fresno State to an effective field goal percentage under 40%. The Wolf Pack also won the turnover battle, committing only seven to Fresno State’s eight, and capitalized with 14 points off those miscues.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Nevada over Fresno State, following a 66-65 win in Fresno on Jan. 3. It also snapped a two-game home winning streak for the Bulldogs in the series and bolstered Nevada’s position in the upper tier of the Mountain West standings.
Fresno State will look to rebound on the road at Utah State on Tuesday. Nevada, meanwhile, prepares for a key conference road test at San Diego State next Saturday.
