Drake Rallies Past Evansville in Missouri Valley Conference Showdown
DES MOINES, Iowa (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering second-half reversal, the Drake Bulldogs erased a 12-point halftime deficit behind a dominant performance from Jalen Quinn to defeat the Evansville Purple Aces 82-78 in a Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Knapp Center.
A crowd of 3,441 watched as the visiting Purple Aces, who led by as many as 14 in the first half, controlled the opening 20 minutes with precise execution. Evansville, led by the sharp-shooting of German guard Leif Moeller, built a 36-30 halftime advantage. The Bulldogs looked disjointed, struggling to find offensive rhythm against a determined Evansville defense.
The narrative flipped completely after the break. Drake emerged from the locker room with intensified defensive pressure, fueling a transition attack that had been absent in the first half. The Bulldogs, who scored just 30 points before halftime, exploded for 52 in the second, outscoring Evansville by 10 over the final 20 minutes.
The catalyst was Quinn, the junior guard from Tuscola, Illinois. After a quiet first half, Quinn took over the game, scoring 20 of his game-high 26 points after intermission. His driving layups, pull-up jumpers, and clutch free throws down the stretch systematically dismantled the Evansville lead. He added five assists, often finding teammates for key baskets during the comeback. Quinn’s performance continued a torrid scoring stretch, following games of 27, 34, and 28 points in his last three outings.
Evansville’s Moeller was brilliant in defeat, finishing with 20 points and a game-high seven assists. His backcourt mate, Bryce Quinet of Scottsdale, Arizona, added 16 points. The Purple Aces’ frontcourt contributed with AJ Casey scoring 15 points and Joshua Hughes adding 11, but the team could not sustain its first-half efficiency against Drake’s renewed vigor.
The most important sequence of the game occurred in the final two minutes, with Drake clinging to a narrow lead. After an Evansville turnover, Quinn drove and kicked to Andrew Alia in the corner. The junior from Kenosha, Wisconsin, drained a critical three-pointer with 2:23 remaining, pushing Drake’s lead to 71-66, a margin the Aces could not overcome. Alia finished with 19 points, a crucial secondary scoring option behind Quinn.
Drake’s victory was forged on the fast break, where they held an 18-7 advantage, and by capitalizing on Evansville’s mistakes, scoring 15 points off turnovers. The Bulldogs also benefited from a balanced attack, with Owen Larson contributing 13 points and Eli Shetlar adding 11.
Defensively, Drake’s Okku Federiko of Helsinki, Finland, provided a pivotal interior presence with three blocked shots, altering several Evansville attempts during the second-half surge.
The win improved Drake’s season record to 12-10 overall. The Bulldogs, who were installed as 9.5-point pregame favorites, narrowly covered the spread in a game where the total points scored, 160, sailed over the projected over/under line of 140.5. Evansville, which had lost to Drake by a single point in their previous meeting on Dec. 21, fell to 5-16 with the defeat.
The game’s outcome defied the first-half story, transforming from a potential upset into a testament to Drake’s resilience and Quinn’s star power. The Bulldogs will look to build on the comeback victory when they host Bradley on Saturday. Evansville, meanwhile, will aim to regroup on the road at Northern Iowa this weekend.
