Dartmouth Outlasts Cornell in High-Scoring Ivy League Shootout

ITHACA, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a high-octane Ivy League shootout where defense often appeared optional, the Dartmouth Big Green rode a blistering first-half offensive display and a commanding performance from guard Connor Amundsen to upset the Cornell Big Red 102-91 on Saturday at Newman Arena.

The game’s decisive stretch arrived late in the first half, transforming a tight contest into a lead Dartmouth would never relinquish. With Cornell holding a narrow 36-35 edge after a Jake Fiegen free throw with just over four minutes remaining before halftime, the Big Green unleashed a devastating 20-2 run to close the period. The surge was fueled by a combination of stifling defense and explosive scoring.

The run began with a Jayden Williams 3-pointer, assisted by Amundsen, to put Dartmouth back ahead. After a Brandon Mitchell-Day block led to a Cornell miss, Amundsen found Jackson Munro for another three. Following a Cornell turnover, Amundsen then connected with Niko Abusara for a layup. The Big Green forced two more Cornell turnovers in the final minutes, converting them into easy baskets, including a driving layup by Amundsen just before the buzzer. When the dust settled, Dartmouth had turned a one-point deficit into a 55-51 halftime lead, scoring the final 11 points of the period.

The second half saw Cornell, led by the prolific scoring duo of Fiegen and Cooper Noard, repeatedly attempt to chip away at the deficit. The Big Red cut the lead to six points on several occasions, but each time Dartmouth had an answer, usually from Amundsen or Williams. A key sequence with just over seven minutes to play typified the half. After a Mateen Rafiq layup brought Cornell within 75-71, Dartmouth’s Cameron McNamee found Williams for a clutch 3-pointer on the ensuing possession. Despite Cornell’s Adam Hinton making two free throws, Dartmouth responded again with a Williams 3-pointer, assisted by Amundsen, to push the lead back to eight and effectively blunt the rally.

Dartmouth’s victory was built on remarkable offensive efficiency and ball security. The Big Green scored on 75 possessions, shooting 55.9% from the field and 46.7% from 3-point range. They committed only five turnovers, which Cornell converted into just 10 points. In stark contrast, the Big Red turned the ball over 12 times, leading to 17 Dartmouth points. The Big Green also dished out 17 assists compared to Cornell’s 12, highlighting their superior ball movement.

Amundsen, a guard from Fresno, California, was the orchestrator, finishing with 23 points and 10 assists in 29 minutes, controlling the tempo and repeatedly finding open shooters. Forward Jayden Williams of Windermere, Florida, provided a major scoring punch with 24 points, including six 3-pointers. The frontcourt duo of Brandon Mitchell-Day (17 points, 3 blocks) and Jackson Munro (13 points) provided efficient interior play.

For Cornell, the loss came despite spectacular individual efforts. Guard Jake Fiegen of Wilmette, Illinois, poured in a game-high 33 points, while backcourt mate Cooper Noard of Glenview, Illinois, added 26. The Big Red shot well from the floor at 47.7% and excelled at the free-throw line, making 20 of 24 attempts, but were ultimately undone by their long-range shooting (9 of 32 from three) and their inability to force Dartmouth into mistakes.

The result shakes up the early Ivy League standings. Dartmouth improves to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play, building momentum after a win at Harvard earlier in the week. Cornell falls to 7-8 and 0-2 in the Ivy League, having also dropped a high-scoring affair to Columbia on Monday. The Big Red had entered the game as a 7.5-point favorite, but Dartmouth’s near-flawless offensive execution proved too much to overcome.

Dartmouth next hosts Penn on Jan. 17, while Cornell travels to face Yale on the same date.
